NFL 2023 Calendar Year - Important Dates

Recommended Posts

With the SB right around the corner, figured it would be a good time to discuss what lies next on the NFL calendar!  We have a busy couple months ahead, I'm pumped to kick it off.

FEBRUARY 28 – MARCH 6 - NFL Scouting Combine, Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana.

MARCH 7 - Deadline for clubs to designate Franchise or Transition Players.

MARCH 7 - Teams are permitted to host 30 draft-eligible, non-local players for physical exams/visits until April 19. Also beginning March 7, teams are allowed to being video or telephone interview with draft-eligible players.

MARCH 13-15 - Clubs are permitted to contact, and enter into contract negotiations with, the agents of players who will become unrestricted free agents.

MARCH 15 - The 2023 League Year and Free Agency period begin at 4:00 p.m.

MARCH 15 - Trading period for 2023 begins at 4:00 p.m.

MARCH 26-29 - Annual League Meeting, Phoenix, Arizona.

APRIL 17 - Clubs with returning head coaches may begin offseason workout programs.

APRIL 21 - Deadline for restricted free agents to sign offer sheets.

APRIL 27-29 - NFL Draft, Kansas City, Missouri.

Now that I think about this, the league used to start this at noon to open negotiations.  I wonder if now it's midnight  like how the used to do FA years ago

For those wondering when exactly Mariota will be gone, he has a 3 million dollar bonus due if  he is on the roster the fifth day of the new NFL year, so by March 19th.

You would think he would be one of those post SB pre start of new league year cuts but I always forget roughly when those types of moves(and trade announcements) take place.

I love the off-season as much as anyone but the NFL drags this too far out.move the combine up to mid February and draft up to mid April

I agree.  I know teams need time between FA and the draft, but honestly, there's no reason to have a month and a half of free agency when most of the moves are sorted out inside 2 weeks or so.

This is my favorite time of the year.  The chess pieces being moved.  The surprises you get coming out of meetings like Kinder eggs.

For many years it was very stressful.  You know, those off-seasons where someone was announced and you screamed, "Who?  What the ****?  Who in **** made that decision?  Really?"  But, you are right, this is actually fun with Fontenot and Smith.
