Falcons request interview with Ryan Neilson

Recommended Posts

This is the first sort of WTH I've seen, seriously.  He's been a co-DC for a couple of years and has only been in the NFL 5 years as a coach.  I'm kind of hoping this is just Fontenot doing his boy a solid by giving him an interview.  Either that or they just know something I don't that makes him a top flight candidate.

I kind of like it, he's young (43) and he may be an untapped talent. I liken him to Ejiro Evero who is 42 and was a QC or offensive/defensive assistant before he got a position's coach job in 2017, coaching safeties for the Rams. He did that for three years, then was a secondary coach for a year, then the DC for the Broncos this past year.

From his profile on the official Aint site.

In his sixth season in charge of the team's defensive line, Ryan Nielsen also served as an assistant head coach in 2021 and in 2022 will add co-defensive coordinator duties. Nielsen has a history of developing players on the professional and college levels and brings abundant experience to the New Orleans defense. Since 2017, New Orleans' 233 sacks ranked third in the league, seven different defensive linemen have produced multi-sack games and the New Orleans defense went an NFL-record 55 regular season and postseason games without allowing a 100-yard rusher between the 2017-20 campaigns and has the longest current streak at 22 consecutive contests. During his tenure in New Orleans, the Saints have ranked in the top ten in sacks four of five seasons and have finished in the top five in run defense the last four campaigns.

So he's also going to improve Falcons viewership so the FO isn't tempted to pump artificial stadium noise into games?

Say it ain't so. Hire him now.

Roddy White approves this message!

wait, maybe he's losing his job and DOESN'T approve this message....

He has been Co DC this year only. Was our D line coach that they kept giving raises to to not take other jobs.

This is the only coach on the Saints I can talk up right now. Would be a huge get for you guys.

Thanks.  I've just never heard of the guy, but I assume we have coaches who would improve your staff that you've never heard of too.  It's always good to get a fan's perspective.  I appreciate the thoughts.

Im curious to see how this plays out. Most teams dont let guys make lateral moves.

But i dont see it as a lateral move. Technically its going from a DC to another DC. But Saints did both Nielsen and Richard a disservice by the co DC thing.

Dont be surprised if the Saints try to block it. Which is kinda weak imo. He deserves a shot to be the guy.

I was curious how that works too.  I mentioned it with another candidate who is in a similar spot (Gray -- associate HC and also a defensive assistant).

I'd wager when you are interviewing to be THE DC it's considered a promotion, but we'll see how it plays out.

I agree..

But we see how technical teams get when it comes to stuff like this. Ive already seen it play out with Jimmy Graham and the whole WR/TE deal.

Its whatever is convenient for them at the time.
