Falcons Restructure Matthews

Recommended Posts

Wow, when is the last time you can remember a Falcons GM making a move like this to SAVE money in the future instead of kicking the can down the road?!  What a smart move, use up the existing cap space from 2022 to save money in 2023 and beyond.  If TF and AS continue to be as prudent with money, personnel decisions, draft, and coaching decisions we're going to be in for a really great run the next few years and hopefully beyond.

Doesn’t unused cap roll over to the next season anyway?

From what I have gathered in the past seeing how cap has rolled over. I think it's some sort of calculation so maybe they end up getting more back this way because from what I've seen in the past usually teams don't roll over 100% that usually get somewhere between 80 to 90%. if my memory serves maybe they can do this and still roll over a small portion if we have any remaining

I'm assuming there's an advantage to doing it this way, although I don't know enough about the cap rules to know what it is. [ and don't want to] .

Assuming that 4.2 comes off of Jake's cap hit, that takes him down to 29.7 mil. If the falcons wanted to take it down even further, they could convert say 10 mil into bonus, which would take it down to 22.2 mil, with cap hits of  20.5 mil for the last 3 years of his contract.

They could also just roll with that 29.7 mil in 23 and have Matthews for 18 mil a season in 24, 25 & 26.

Either way, the LT position is stable and affordable the next few years. They also have room to maneuver the cap with his contract.

Exactly what I was thinking.

TF is playing chess where TD was playing tic-tac-toe.

This seems to be the best way to approach it as I see it (eat the 29.7 and then take the 18 per for the remaining seasons on the contract).  More flexibility, and we have cap space going forward already, so there is no need to do anything to create more cap space in 2023.  We already have a ton in 2023, and we are going to sign players to longer term contracts that will reduce cap space in future years, so there is no need to borrow for the future next season.

Looking at Spotrac, it looks like this makes it easier for us to move on from Jake in 2024 and beyond if he starts to decline.  They haven't updated his numbers yet, but cutting his $10M roster bonus to $3M by paying $7M of it in 2022, means his bonus cap hit drops from $2.5M a season over the next 4 seasons to $750K.   So it reduces dead cap money for cutting him to:

2024 - $2.5M in dead money

2025 - $1.5M in dead money

2026 - $750K

This also reduces his cap hit per year by $1.75M , so $16.25M vs $18M.

I don't think that's correct.  The 2.5 mil is  bonus that was already prorated. I'm thinking that the bonus they paid him this year is from the roster bonus of 10.5 mil.  We'll see when the numbers get posted.

Still, even if the 2.5 stays, it's pretty cheap to cut him if they need to.
