Breaking Down the Play That Allgeier Cleared 1,000 Yards

Recommended Posts

Wanted to take a second to slow down and appreciate the play that took Allgeier over the 1,000 yard mark.  This was another great design, a pin-pull toss play to the left that we run a handful of times a game and London is really coming into his own in executing his blocks on these.  Last week we ran it to the right with McGary on the 3rd & 7 that Allgeier picked up.  This week was to the left with Matthews for a first.  These are plays we ran early in the year and were just off on, as the season went along the execution was SO much better on these.  I'm sure Nate Tice will have a better video clip that shows this even better from the all 22 tape, but figured I would show a couple screenshots from this run and link it in the video with the time stamp if you want to watch the full play as well.

Pre-Snap alignment, London is going to crash down on the end to free up Matthews to loop around.  Hence the term pin-pull.

London executes it flawlessly, blockers are in place moving downfield, Matthews loops around.

Notice the two DBs in blue starting to break on the play.

Here their DBs moved forward 3-4 yards to close the gap.  Matthews gets full steam in a wide open lane, Allgeier following behind.

Now the DBs realize what's happening and start to retreat knowing that Matthews has over 100 pounds on them (business decision for sure).  If Matthews doesn't get freed up this is likely a tackle for loss or no gain, but because he does they back off.

Pruitt loses contain on his block and this may have gone the distance if this doesn't happen.

Matthews almost takes them both out at the same time clearing more room for Allgeier.  Allgeier does a great job as always fighting through arm tackles at first and then it turns into him dragging the guy for the first.

Matthews has a hell of a block, we get the first down and Allgeier goes for 1,000 yards!

It's at this point that Matthews realizes that he may have just murdered someone.

I always felt Jake was criminally underrated by people here. Folks will miss him when he's gone, just like any good OL (remember all the people wanting Mud Duck replaced...? lol).

Always awesome to see how much goes into even a simple run play. Good to see our shiny hood ornament WR getting his hands dirty, too.

This offense is going to be so good next year. You know they'll grab a solid OLine piece, or the youngsters will develop.  Maybe both. Then, with a competent passer, I'm assuming Ridder, the ability of being able to run or throw out of every offensive set will make it incredibly difficult to stop.

Weren't able to see that this year because Mariota just couldn't pass well enough to keep the defenses honest. Or make quick enough decisions, or make the throws. Ridder can- hit an occasional deep shot, make quick presnap and post snap reads, buy time,  run a little.

When this offense is cooking, defenses will be on their heels all game long, never knowing if it's going to be a run or a pass. Imagine the offense from early in the season with a QB that can make the throws.

Finished 13th in overall offensive dvoa this year, 3rd in rushing DVOA!!  Just think when we have another year in system and like you said, someone who can actually pass the ball.  Should be a top 10 offense no doubt.  Meanwhile Titans just fired their OC.  Guess it wasn’t just Henry who made Smith look so good after all. 😂
