Could Lovie Smith be the Falcons next DC?

Lovie Smith is officially available. Do you think that the Falcons may try to bring in Lovie Smith as the next DC? He seems like a coach players love and respect.

I don't know if he has any ties to our coaching staff or if his defense fits Arthur Smith's vision. Your thoughts?

A tampa 2 4-3 coach running a baltimore-inspired 3-4?

Yeah, he's definitely not a scheme fit for the Falcons personnel

This. Talk about fitting a square peg in a round hole

I'm not saying the Falcons should hire Lovie, but under Pees they have had bottom 10 defenses both years. Lovie comes from the same coaching tree as Dan Quinn and Raheem Morris. Morris, frankly, got better results in 2020. The Falcons have a lot of players acquired for the 4-3 and they haven't really acquired any player of any significance for Pees system.

I think our best bet might be Jared Mayo from New England. He had 2 years of overlap with Pees as the DC when he was a player. He's played and coached under Belichik for 14 years, and is currently the ILB coach for the Patriots.

He has a ton of experience in a 3-4 and has coached alongside some great defensive coaches. He's young but should be ready to take that next step.

Better defense in 2020 maybe but they weren't good. We aren't trying to replicate that, at least I hope not.

Also, even if we have some players that could fit into a 4-3, our players have been taught and coached up a certain way for the past couple years. Implementing a different system will require the players we do have now to learn again which will take more time to maximize our potential. Doable but I feel unnecessary
