I want to resign McGary

I don't disagree with this necessarily BUT there's a decent amount of RTs hitting the market that may be upgrades:

  • George Fant
  • Mike McGlinchey
  • Billy Turner
  • JaWuan James
  • Jawaan Taylor
  • David Quessenberry

If we can get one of those, would yall consider that an upgrade?

I will admit it would be stone cold if TF lets McGary walk. Usually when a guy improves on his last year it's been customary to award the improvement with a new deal. He did his part now you do yours. BUT, with McGary being bipolar between run/pass block I could see TF go with someone who was more balanced but not as good as a run blocker ........ for less. Unless AS REALLY needs run blocking as a premium and is willing to accept McGary's faults.

I know it's a contract year and you often can't trust the performance will be consistent going forward.

I know he really needs help with his pass blocking.

But the guy is really starting to assert his personality. He's developed a "Harvey Dahlish" nastiness that is really making us a force in the run game. I say work on the weaknesses, and resign him.

Given the market I think he may be our best option at the moment. The pass blocking isn’t as good as his run blocking but looking at his jump from last season to this season it could be the next part of his game to come along. I wouldn’t give him a top tier deal but I would consider the next level below that. Good linemen are hard to find.

Yeah, I don’t see TF playing the franchise tag game with Kaleb’s side at all. As you said way too expensive, and would end up being just plugging a temporary leak on a still rebuilding team.

Either you believe in him as your RT in what you are building here or you don’t. He’s shown me enough to try and sign him to a 3-4 year deal.

McGary seems like a pretty simple guy, I’m willing to bet as long as the Falcons offer him something that isn’t insulting he’ll take the contract and won’t look back.

As long as it’s within a FMV (2023)range for starting RT, I agree. Problem for TF in negotiations is Kaleb performed at a near-elite level RT this last season of his rookie contract. So I think it will be tricky, if for no other reason than player salaries are escalating.

Most likely scenario is he hits the market and another team offers him more than what we’re willing to pay.

Look at guys like Elgton Jenkins and Jack Conklin. They were resigned just a few weeks ago and have similar deals. Gotta think that’s gonna be the starting point for a McGary deal and I don’t know if it gets done here.

My solution is let him walk and draft Peter Skorwonski as his replacement. Great replacement at a much cheaper price and not to mention MUCH higher upside.

McGary is a keeper. Our offense's identity is built on the run game, and McGary embodies that with his reputation as a mauler that finishes plays. He's an elite run blocker, and better at pass blocking than he gets credit for on here.

Keep in mind, he's projected to be one of the top FA tackles. So if you want to replace him you have to ask these questions: Is this guy really an upgrade? Will our run blocking get worse? How much will the new guy cost vs. how much McGary would cost? Will the new guy have the same rapport with Lindstrom?

The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

We could do better.  We could also have more than one good WR.

But if you want to keep him cause he is cheap right now, so be it.

😎👍

Dude should end up between 800-900 yards as a rookie…on a run first team with an incompetent QB and a 3rd round rookie throwing the rock to him. His catch radius is insane as a good potion of those yards came from snagging erratic passes. All while having no other receiving threats to take coverage attention away from him. Other than his fumbles not sure what else we could expect from London this year. He will be a bonafide WR1 next season, dudes legit…this coming from someone who didn’t like the pick (though I understood why they did it).

just one guy’s unqualified opinion. 👍

If you are willing to give McGary almost 20M guaranteed next season on a franchise tag then you are a fool. That's 1/4th of the teams cap space next year dedicated to one average player.

That would also make Matthews and McGrady both number one at their respective tackle positions for 2023

London sets this up nicely but don’t take for granted how many tackles probably wiff on this pull block.  Nice job McGary, love Smith’s run scheme.  Lindstrom is also very good still lol.

Kaleb is a bad *** bully. He and Lindstrom are such a formable pair on that right side of line.

If McGary performs in the future to the level he did this past season, then the only possible upgrade in this list is McGlinchey....which would be significant in Pass Pro...however even with Shannys run offense, McGlinchy run grades have been awful...

Face it...Braden Smith's 4 year $70 million deal is probably McGary's ballpark contract...out of the OL positions, I think RT is the least amount of issues translating to NFL if the player has the athletic traits to handle speed rushers...this draft is not deep at OT like recent drafts...

Most likely its McGary or retread like Lewan or someone else looking to get PT after a major injury and ATL takes a flyer

I agree overall, I just don't see any clear path upgrades and robbing peter to pay paul in terms of run and pass blocking that creates another hole to plug with a new face along the line, just doesn't sound appealing to me.

I do agree, I don't want Kaleb to break the bank so this is all contingent on cost but so far from what (limited) we have seen of TF, doesn't seem like he will overpay like TD but time will tell!

I think you resign him cheap and find competition. I wouldn't go crazy and do a  I think we should get another Center either quality in Free agent or a 2nd day draft pick. In a final season performance knowing his job is on the line I wouldn't bite on a long term deal.

Just realized that after Sunday the only tackle under contract for next season will be Jake Matthews.

Both Ifedi and McGary are UFAs.

We are an injury to J Matthews away from total OL disaster.

Yeah after Sam "TRex" Baker I'm gunshy of throwing money at an OL who shows up for his final contract year.

Yeah, make him prove it 2 years in a row.

Way too similar a situation for my liking, even down to a checkered injury history (back vs heart condition).

I'm hesitant on a long term deal for him. I'm always wary of guys performing well in a contract year and being average before that. To me, he's still suspect in pass blocking which is what we'll be doing more of next year. TD gave contracts out like candy and paid for it several times.

If AS and Ledford and their schemes are that good (so far their run schemes are great), theoretically, we should be able to groom another guy there fairly quick. Run blockers are easier to find than pass blockers and McGary still struggles with speed off the edge.

If anything, we franchise him or offer him a team friendly deal but still fair value where he can be cut after a couple years with little ramifications. So basically most of the money up front when we actually have space to work with. It's one of the most common NFL contracts.

Yeah, in theory we should be getting good pass protectors and teaching them the run blocking schemes.

Getting good run blockers/bad pass blockers leaves you one dimensional.
