Rapoport: Falcons love the development of Ridder. His poise and accuracy in preseason gave him the QB #2 position, instead of bringing in a veteran.

The Falcons, sources say, do love the development of the third-rounder from Cincinnati. In the preseason, he flashed poise and accuracy. It was enough to allow the Falcons to have him be their backup, rather than sign a veteran in case Mariota was injured. That is faith in their rookie. Ian Rapoport

Exactly. The fact he is the official backup QB for a QB that has a history of injuries and not playing every game of the season, then says a lot about where Ridder is and how the coaching staff sees him. Otherwise, they could have easily designate him as a practice squad player or given the 3rd string QB label and had another cheap veteran come in as the backup.

Reminds me of when Wilson was drafted in SEA even though they rolled the dice on Whitehurst to be a bridge QB…except Carroll was willing to play the better QB. 😬

Redman<Ryan.  Redman got hurt and Ryan rolled.  I have to think the same thing would be relevant here now.  Bridge gets hurt, Des comes in.  Franks to QB2.

He's a third rounder if you want him to be the guy he's going to need development time. MARIOTTA was a number 2 overall.

Your narrative that if a player is drafted in 3rd  round it means he isn’t ready to play at any point in his rookie season is vacuous and has been debunked countless times here.

At least we can bury this odious narrative that Ridder “isn’t ready” into the ground of the graveyard of debunked narratives.

Makes it even more puzzling that AS doesn't play Ridder. Yeah we're playing for the playoffs, but who says we won't be better with Ridder? Are we in the playoff hunt in spite of Mariota? Questions galore
