Where is the quick passing game

Recommended Posts

This is a big question I have. We see Soo many teams use this against us but we never see it on offense. We have 2 big bodies WR/TEs Patterson can run a couples quick things if need and is a big body. It's sad and pathetic we don't do swing routs slants quick diggs anything. It's all 15+ yard shots or 5 step drop backs. Is it AS or is it Mariota that we don't do any 3 step and quick throw plays.

Mariota is not that type of QB.

He's a one, maybe 2, read QB.

And when teams know you can't go deep they sit on the short and underneath stuff.

Just look at the Falcons in 2013 and 2014 and they had a QB that could do the short/quick game. But they couldn't block long enough for deep shots so the defense didn't have to worry about it and focused on the short game.

Yep. Been saying that even with Ryan. That’s not the QBs decision always.  The whole reason you want a big body TE is that quick hit and run. If the TE stays open, 5 yard pass all day. But if not, there’s probably a WR with a chance. We never use TEs for close target. I don’t know why. Dink and dunk sure works against us.

Mariota has placement and accuracy problems on longer balls but his short 5-10 yard balls are just fine. And he knows how to rotate to make those hits consistently. He just doesn’t do it often enough.

Use Pitts, Hesse or even Franks the same way everyone else does.
If we schemed to Mariota’s strength instead of his weakness this board would be a lot different mood today.

Because it's not that easy.

It's hard for to get open in tight spaces like that.

Tony Gonzalez could do it because he was one of the best ever... maybe the best.

Pitts isn't that type of TE.

Tried some of it last night. Mariota was throwing at receivers feet, back shoulders, a*s cheeks and over their heads though. He used to just be abysmal throwing over 10 yards, now he can hit a guy behind the LOS even.

That was especially sad. To see him skip the ball off the ground where the WR might have been able to do something.

Defenses are stacking the box. Where exactly are you gonna be throwing the ball?

Mariota almost had several passes picked off trying to throw quick passes into the middle of the field or short. The play calling isn't the issue. If a NFL QB can't hit a 6'6" TE running wide open 15 to 20 yards down field, you have a QB problem, period. No amount of window dressing or make-up is going to fix that.

I think we need more of it for sure, but the truth is Mariota is missing a lot of those easy shots in the flat, so.......

Yep. I remember one pass Mariota tried to throw behind the LOS to Algeier. He was little more than an arms length away but I swear Mariota's throw missed him by two feet. Okay there was already a guy in Mariota's grill, but we're still talking about a 5-foot pass, not a 5-yard pass. 😂

Also, forget the quick passing game.  Why aren't we getting Mariota out on some designed runs, ESPECIALLY on 3rd downs?  The only time he runs is when the play breaks down.  Why not spread the defense out and roll him out on a run/pass option more?

Maybe they're calling them and Mariota is trying to prove he can win from the pocket, but it seems to me they're trying to keep him from getting hurt.  And at this point, that's hurting the entire offense.

Last night and week before it looked like it was one read. He was just staring the WR down. He's left as many plays on the field these past two games than a good QB would do in 17.

He did a good job on one of the TD passes looking the defense off.  I don't think he's that simple.

I do think he is bad at making pre-snap reads, and I think that Ridder is good at that, and I think that's why Mariota is indecisive.  He's not sure of what he's seeing after the snap, where Ridder is.
