Can Arthur Smith run the ball without D Henry? - Yes

These types of takes are silly. Hunt is still on the practice squad and Allgiere has significantly less Carry’s  if CP isn’t on IR for 4 weeks

Huntley's been on the active roster for a month now. And why does that matter? It speaks to the scheming being drawn up, depth/talent we didn't have last year, and having a mobile QB to keep teams honest allowing the RBs to eat.

The running back in the run game is never really the focal point. Its always the Oline, the run scheme, and execution. Just look at the Shanahan model, any RB off the street is amazing in there.

I have the same viewpoint as this guy

Sure Henry is a great player and maybe he can make more people miss or run them over. But overall, a RB will prolly perform the same if they are NFL level RBs to make those cuts, runs, vision, etc.

I think the purpose of the thread is to show that Smith's running game was not just the benefactor Derek Henry. Should we add all the yards from all of them? Almost 1200 yards so far this year and no Derek Henry or Nick Chubb or Saquon Barkley

The shanny model just traded multiple picks for a part-time RB that stays hurt. He proceeded to score 3 TDs in 3 different ways last weekend.

Some RBs are built differently. I think a RB like CMC and Kamara hold a ton of value for the versatility they bring to an offense.

Way to look at the situation in the most pessimistic way imaginable. Most teams that had their #1 back go down would see their run game go in the toilet.  Somehow AS has keep the machine running without. His bell cow.

Sure, some RBs are more gifted then others. But tell me is getting a RB like CMC worth the risk and money SF had to give up? Its a position with the most injuries and the fall off for these guys is fast. I mean even Shanny himself, the year they went to the SB, just had average NFL RBs starting. I just personally dont think paying an RB is a good investment and decision. That money can be better spent in different areas of the team like Oline.

RBs are still a dime in a dozen and should never be signed to a big contract or take a big chunk of your cap room unless they are your missing piece which is still a debatable topic. Sure there are guys like CMC, Henry, Barkley that can change games but there are more no names than big names out there making contributions. Shanny has had more random dudes at RBs than real names. The CMC move, IMO, is a move to get them over the top but I don't think they will because they still have Jimmy G at QB who holds them back. Also, Kyle's got a 500 record as a head coach so it's not like he exactly lighting it up.

I don’t see CMC having a long career either.

I think those years where he was overused in Carolina will contribute to that.

The best part of the running game on a team with a porous defense is that most running plays keep the clock moving.

I am reminded of the former NFL coach "Ground" Chuck Knox who used to say, "there is only one good result in the passing game and that is a completion.  There are 3 bad results though, an incompletion, a sack or an turnover, and each stops the clock. However 1/3 of all completions occur on the sidelines, so that too usually stops the clock. The ideal completion keeps the clock running" (remember, this was back in the 70s)

"Played correctly, there is one bad possible result from a running play and that is a turnover.  Even no gain or a loss, and the clock still runs, and any running back that ends up out of bounds isnt doing it correctly"  (Chuck Knox was a pretty no-nonsense, no excuses kinda guy)

PS: If you happen to be old like me and remember Chuck Knox, check out Arthur Smith.  I think the guys were separated at birth as their approach to the game was exactly the same.

I agree with both tbh.  I gotta be honest I have been watching Pierce this year and he would look INCREDIBLE in this offense.  Allgeier and Huntley are good and I am happy with them, but dudes like Pierce, Walker, Hall are great and would elevate this run game even more.  That said, unless you have a Henry type player, I would not spend a ton on the position, second contracts seem like a huge risk that almost never pans out, but I'd be ok with pretty consistently churning the position via the draft and 2-4 round picks.

AS should start the game using him as a decoy. Then in the second half after their D has been lulled to sleep, unleash the Kraken.

I like that idea, a LOT!!!  But honestly, I wish they would save him for the Carolina game to make sure he's 100% --- Wes Durham even said that the other day on 92.9 The Game....besides, our run game has been pretty dang good as of late!

Wouldn't argue with that, but I'd Ridley it would take a small army to keep CP off the field entirely Sunday. 😆

We are week 9 of the NFL season, no one is 100% lol.  I see what you are saying, but imo, if there is no risk of further injury players need to play.
