Don't know much about either but think Mateo is all defense no bat.

Yeah, kind of a Javy Baez type but younger. If they really are concerned about Grissom's defense, he wouldn't be a bad alternative, he's as good or better than Swanson in the field. With the number of groundball pitchers on the staff they really can't just cross their fingers at shortstop.

I dont think you need to move the needle that much. The core of the team is still really good and Albies will be back with a fully healthy Acuna too. You really just need someone to catch the ball at SS, the offense should be fine regardless. Rosario/Luplow is going to be LF it appears. You can add a bat in July to supplement if you need to.

Banking on 2 guys to return to firm from injuries and 2 rookies to not regress in year 2 is pretty tall asks.

We were always going to be doing that though. No matter who was in LF or SS we were going to be banking on Riley, Acuna, Olson, Albies, Harris to lead the offense with Strider being a key to the rotation. Dansby was clutch but you couldn't always count on him offensively.

I don't disagree but then adding a rookie in there who isn't even good defensively to play SS sure seems like a bad idea.

I'm not sold on Grissom being ready but I meant more like if you added Mateo to the team. Just play defense and hit 9th, all you should need. He could also cause havoc on the bases in front of Acuna.

If the braves can get even average production from LF then you can afford to have a light hitting SS

Why do you like Diaz so much?

Left-handed hitter, good contact skills, decent pop, good defense at first. He may not make the club, but based on the roster as it stands right now, I like him better than Ozuna or Hilliard, the players he's essentially going to be competing against.

Ok - Here goes:

- Sign Fried now
- 7yrs and $200mm
- $28.57mm AAV
- carries Fried from Ages 29-36

- buys out two arbitration years where Fried would make about $32mm - so if he was free agent now he would probably make $64mm in those years

- Why Fried does this?   Guarantees $200mm versus $16mm this year only guaranteed.

- Why Braves do this?  Fried is true superstar and the true ACE of the staff.   At free agency, Fried probably gets $35mm/yr and 7-8yrs as a player two years older.

- Contract:  Guessing could be structured to lower until Ozuna contract off the books - I know that doesn’t help with luxury tax but even still.

At some point, you gotta give someone a legit market contract near market value.  This is still a discount but Braves need to maintain this specific player as he is the horse and still should be dominant for majority of contract if he stays relatively healthy.

Another bargain deal. A 30 year old Willson Contreras had a 3.9 WAR and similar numbers, Murphy had a 3.5 WAR, Contreras gets $17.5M per for 5 and Murphy picks Atlanta for $12M per for 6 years.

The Braves also still saved $500K on the 2023 payroll by swapping Pina for Murphy.
