The good thing is Wash already had Grissom in New Orleans training him up this offseason. So they got a head start at least. He'll be better defensively with Wash training him.

Been working with Riley for 3 years now and he's still one of the worst defensive players in MLB.

You can't teach range.

There is a LOT of room between Dansby and Terrible.(your first line even says it)

Riley is FAR FROM horrific as he is one of the best defensive 3rd basemen in the league.

And that is where Grissom is defensively right now. To add, just like with everyone else you still have “Wash” to help him improve even from that point. 

I think we will be fine eventually.

Riley is coming off a breakout season for the defending World Series Champion Braves. By homering 33 times, driving in 107 runs and posting an OPS just shy of .900, Riley earned himself a Silver Slugger Award, and finished seventh in National League MVP voting. Perhaps even more impressive is that Riley went from a defensive liability at third base in 2020 (-10 defensive runs saved) to leading all third basemen with 13 defensive runs saved in 2021.

I look for the Braves to sign Jose Iglesias for SS for 2023 to shore up the defense and will let Grissom get some reps as SS as well as 2B and LF as they see if he can handle SS in the MLB

Defensively Dansby was a stud, and he had really come on with the bat this year. I am just not sold on him being an every year player worth $25 mil. per. Good job AA. It sucks, because I wanted him to be here, but AA is the best GM in baseball.

So I guess we’ll cherry pick that one year (and stat) for your argument that he can’t get better? Even though he already showed he can..

I have learned that when folks start down this road, there is no changing of their minds so I just keep it moving. 

But like we were saying, Riley is FAR FROM Horrible as stated before.

Because he's not horrible anymore he is actually a positive player at 3B on the defensive side now. Even the eye test is saying that as well.  I'll be the 1st to say that Riley looked rough the year before but he was a different player on defense last year while watching him.

He was bad in 2020 and 2022.

Got better then regressed so yeah I'm not the one cherry picking but we all know you'll stick with it till they leave then you wash your hands.

You do understand that you’ve now contradicted your statement that he can’t get better? Which was the original premise of my argument…

Pretty much the MO around here.. find a statistic that supports your argument and don’t bend. I say that while fully acknowledging that I’ve done the same. 
Bringing up the eye test becomes subjective at that point. If someone finds a stat that backs their eye test up, game over.

I'm not saying I don't like Riley, I'm just saying that him and Grissom on the left side with no shift is going to cause issues.

I'd much rather a guy like Iglesias at SS and let Grissom play some LF while getting reps at SS.

FWIW, Riley's enigmatic as a defender. His bWAR is 1.2 for 2022 and 1.5 for 2021. Meanwhile, Fangraphs rates his defense as -3.1 for 2022 and -1.2 for 2021. So, he's obviously a challenging evaluation for everyone.

I'm not really sure what that has to do with our situation at SS, though. In truth, I don't expect Grissom to play there. If anything, he's our left fielder since he's substandard defensively. As little as he played this year, he still managed to grade as -4.1 at Fangraphs and -0.3 in bWAR. That's alarming for someone who only played about 25 percent of the season.

I fully expect us to snag a defensive shortstop sometime between now and late March.

Okay, that's fair. I don't consider Riley bad. Given the data, I think that he's like Dansby as a hitter. There are pros and cons, and he is streaky with his glove.
