First Half Playcalling Really Got Us Behind the 8-Ball

Recommended Posts

Bogus officiating fixed the game against us in the end, but we really hurt ourselves in the first half calling plays for an offense that we aren’t, as currently constructed.  Plain and simple, we need to run 4-5 times for every pass play, and stop ending up 3rd and 10 with all kinds of incompletions.  Do that, and we can beat anybody.

The franks drop hurt with momentum killing, the line looked overwhelmed constantly, the hodge drop killed momentum and then our run designs were just WTH compared to last week off the top of my head. Pair that with some Mariota errant throws and we just looked pitiful the first half.

We should have had at least 10-14pts in the 1st half.

The one drive on the nice pass to London where a weak holding call brought it back. Turned 3-7pts into 0.

The Hodge drop that was likely a walk in TD. then the missed fg. Costed us likely 7 but at least 3. Not to mention it gave the Bucs a short field and a FG before half.

Add in Terrell dropping a pick 6 on the Bucs 1st drive and it could have easily been 17-10 or 21-10 at halftime us leading.

We shot ourselves in the foot the entire 1st half. Outside of the Saints game we have just been a far better team in the 2nd half and more specifically the 4th quarter.

This sums it up pretty well.

Me-Franks experiment should be over after easy “drop”! Meanwhile, Firkser makes a tough catch & you never see him again! The play calling & use of personal baffles me

As usual....it is a mixture of both.

There is no scenario where having Hesse block Veta is a win for the Falcons.

Agreed, not sure who owns blocking assignments this year, but that should have been shifted some for sure.

Yeah, it's time to demote the Franks experiment to the practice squad for now.

Edwards was again a no show on the field today too. We should have kept Bernhardt on the active roster and given him a chance. Shoot, give Frank Darby a try.

AS deserves a pat on the back for getting Avery Williams into a position where he can play more meaningful snaps outside of special teams. 1st, Avery Williams had some really good returns today and his work at RB was good when his number was called. I'm impressed. He has seen opportunity and he has answered. For two years now Feliepe has had the occasional opportunity and never been able to make good on it.

It was good to see how Andersen emerged in the game too.

With all of the movement that we are doing it is hard to get a real gage of responsibility.

The first sack was obvious.... Matthews just got beat by a good spin move.

The rest...I need to watch again.

They were handling the run pretty well in the first half, but come on Mariota get your **** together.

Today was certainly ripe for Mariota to emerge. Five games in and the rust is off. You have a situation where two of your key offensive players can't go so it would take someone else to lead the offense besides CP84, but it never really happened if that someone was supposed to be MM1.

I have sincerely thought that MM1 might be our QB answer for the next several years, but that feeling has slipped away from me today. We can't get out of our own way on offense. Something isn't right and it's time for a change if we want to make a run for the playoffs this year. Even if it doesn't result in that we will find out if we do have our QB of the future in Ridder. It's time.

Someone mentioned that since AS likes experiments with players switching positions to get more snaps that we ought to try Mariota in a role like what Taysom Hill plays. I think there is validity to that thought because MM1 just has a ceiling above him at QB that he can't push through.

The Felipe experiment should end.  PS is where he needs to be.  Or, elsewhere.

Maybe we should bring back AJ McCarron to be our backup QB, he is still out there wanting a chance to join a team. At least he is familiar with our offense. I would swap Mariota for Ridder and IMO that should have happened today so we don't have some kind of drama going forward. Ridder could have come in and earned the position today if given the chance and If he didn't do good then you could still have started Mariota next week against the 9ers and said you were just trying to spark the offense against a tough TB defense. Maybe that happens next week, I guess we'll see.

My point is that AS should know that the team - as it currently exists - is not going to execute what he was calling in the first half.  Too many passes.

I agree it was more pass happy than I’d have liked, that said more often than not the plays were there to be made, we just didn’t make them.

Darby had been active the last two games with Edwards being inactive.
