Falcons sign DL Christopher Hinton to practice squad

Yes, he’s that Chris Hinton’s son.

The Falcons are suddenly on a roster shuffling spree. They’ve added multiple defensive linemen to the practice squad and have surprisingly cut ties with Anthony Rush, seemingly setting us up to see at least one player elevated from the practice squad Sunday.

Today, they added one more to fill their remaining practice squad spot. The player may not be familiar, but if you’re a Falcons fan of a certain age, the name certainly will be. That’s because it’s Christopher Hinton, son of former All-Pro tackle and four year Falcon Chris Hinton.

The 2022 undrafted free agent plays on the other side of the ball from his dad, making his way to the NFL as an impactful defensive lineman for Michigan. The Giants scooped him up after the draft and he also spent time with the Dolphins, who cut him from the practice squad a couple of weeks ago. With quality size and strength, Hinton becomes an immediately interesting practice squad stash for a team without a lot of proven defensive line depth, and it’s really cool to see him joining the same team the senior Chris Hinton played for.

Atlanta will, as we mentioned, almost certainly bring a player up to the active roster from the practice squad, with veteran Jaleel Johnson and rookie Derrick Tangelo looming as potential options. Matt Dickerson, Abdullah Anderson, and Timothy Horne will likewise get plenty of run, as they’re already on the roster and both Anderson and Horne have had their quality moments as reserves this year.

We’ll see what happens there, but either way, give Hinton a warm welcome to Atlanta.

Overview
Early-entry nose tackle with good lower-body power but enough on tape to get excited about. Hinton, whose father is a former seven-time Pro Bowler, can sit down and defend his gaps and offers up a good fight against double teams. He will be scheme-dependent as he's unable to disrupt in the gaps or stay on schedule against move-blocking fronts. He has potential as a backup run-defending nose, but a lack of rush and explosiveness will hurt his chances.
Strengths
  • His father, Chris Hinton, is a former seven-time Pro Bowler
  • Attacks blocker with good leverage.
  • Drops low and anchors down against double teams.
  • Solid job of minding his gaps and fits.
  • Separates from interior blocks as a rusher.
  • Shoves the edge open and creates breathing room to attack pocket.
Weaknesses
  • Below-average reaction time off the snap.
  • Lacks explosiveness into the neutral zone.
  • Consistently cut and reached on the backside.
  • Unable to play in a one-gapping scheme.
  • Doesn't have moves or counters to affect the rush.
  • Offers minimal closing burst once he's inside the pocket.

Falcons are apparently working on a legacy line with Jessie Tuggle's son (Grady) and now Chris Hinton's.  Does John Abraham have a son we can pick up and plug in?  Babineaux?  Kerney?

Tyler Starr’s son?  Ashley Lelie’s son?  Eugene Robinson’s son?

Wears 300 pounds as good as anyone – Even could add more weight if necessary

  • Son of a near decade long pro-bowler
  • Stays gap sound
  • Has the ability to control blockers and disengage to make a play in his gap
  • Plays with a good low pad level

CON'S:

  • One of the slower get offs I’ve scouted this year
  • Made MSU’s Kevin Jarvis look like a first round OG (UDFA grade for Jarvis on the consensus board)
  • Doesn’t possess a single pass rush move
  • Very poor play strength for a 300+ pounder
  • Gets destroyed by double teams
  • Can be driven off the ball 1 on 1
  • Sub-33” arms

His father was the real deal, a very good FA signing of the falcons back in the day.

He was a trade...and what a fun trade!

On April 20, 1990, the Indianapolis Colts traded him to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for the Falcons' first overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft, which they used to select top quarterback prospect Jeff George. The Falcons also received wide receiver Andre Rison, who was the Indianapolis Colts' first-round pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, their fifth-round pick in the 1990 NFL Draft, and their first-round pick in the 1991 NFL Draft.

That trade got us two of my favorite Falcons ever. And unlike many, I was actually a Jeff George fan, so when he arrived, I was happy about that, too.
