Why would he not be in competition with McGary? Is McGary that good now? If every player on that roster isn't competing to be on that field every day can you really expect improvement?

What you obviously don't understand is that it's not the media nor your job to determine mcgary's value. Apparently, in the coach's eyes, yes he is that good. He also has 2 other guys(who he beat out) behind him on the depth chart. Please stop arguing about things above our paygrade.

Probably because he just went through a full camp and preseason of competition. And was not unseated

This just goes back to my point. Who was his competition? Who did he play against to determine he's the guy? I guess I should expect pro bowl caliber play from McGary given Smith's confidence in him. That or Edoga has a thing going with Smith's girl. Anyway, it seemed like a strange thing for Smith to say.

Who did McGary beat out to "earn" his spot?

You're right. It's been the most competitive camp ever. 55 ex Bears who couldn't make that roster were in Atlanta fighting to make it. It's super competitive considering how stacked the roster is.

If Smith was really concerned about McGary then they would have brought in other people to compete at the spot like they did with Mayfield.

And boiling everything down to the meme of us only signing ex Bears is just stupid. Pretty obvious that there was a ton of competition along the DL, secondary, wide receivers, linebackers, OL, TE, etc etc. Pretty much everywhere.

Two players from last year's starting OL lost their starting position. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will the Falcons trenches.

I bet we pay a lot more money and attention to the lines this coming off season.

17 games last season observed closely by his coach gives him a head up.

Shouldn't Smith be concerned with McGary? When did he become untouchable? There's no sacred cows right? Remember?

You say there was a ton of competition then you contradict that by saying if Smith was concerned with McGary they would have brought in other people to compete. That is stupid. This is exactly what I'm saying about Smith's comment. It completely contradicts the no sacred cows and everyone is competing.

I get people wanting to be all over coach Smith's jock strap when he's saying rah rah stuff about competition. I don't get how these people continue to do so when the guy blatantly contradicts that by saying he's not competing. If he's not competing they aren't trying. You can't justify that no matter how hard you try.

So, if edwonu comes into practice and starts pancaking grady and keeping mariota clean while mcgary is stinking the place up you really think AS won't take notice? I mean what do you want, they declined his 5th year. Apparently the plan all along has been to spend money on the position when they have it to spend. Coach is just saying it's backup not a replacement plan. Why not get worked up over a legitimate problem like lg, c, or nt?

I would expect Smith to be a man of his word and stick with McGary or not make such a stupid comment in the first place. That's been my point this entire time.

A tackle who got cut by THE JETS, last time I checked they desperately need tackles up there losing Becton again.. but yea Falcons sign him and he’s the next Orlando Pace and should overtake Kaleb by next week right guys?

the amount of emotional stupid in this fanbase is concerning.

Nobody said that would happen. No worries though. McGary is so good they declined his 5th year. Never mind they harped about competition then said he's not competing.

If it's McGary's job to lose then you just made my point for me. If a starter isn't looking over his shoulder it's due to two reasons. Sacred cow or the starter is just that d@mn good. Nothing in McGary's past proves he's that good. Ok, so he had a good camp and preseason vs. Falcons, Jets, and Jaguars. Hardly a bunch of world beaters.

Well, that can be said about every starter in the NFL, doesn't matter how good they are. If Grady starts stinking up the field, he will lose his job too. That doesn't mean Anderson is competing for Grady's job.  Anderson , like the new OLineman, is just trying to stay on the team. They aren't competing for anything.

It’s funny watching folks in here trying to reason with your nonsense.

McGary has stunk it up for 3 years now. So much they declined his 5th year option.
