I can’t believe I’m saying this, but after watching Ridder all preseason, I want him start sooner than later. He has traits of elite QBs. Videos linked

Agreed. Preseason is not the real thing. Teams aren't showing much of their playbooks, and depending on who happens to be in the game, players can look like all-pros or Alpo.

Until I'm shown different, my mind won't let go of '3rd rounder for a reason'. He's going to have to seriously impress AS to get on the field in games that matter. And if we have a bad season, he won't be out there because he earned it. He'll be out there because they'll be evaluating him against the 2023 crop of draft QBs.

Exactly, the Jets game where Ridder looked awesome was some of the worst defense I've ever seen. Doesn't take away from the throws that Ridder made, but it's a whole other ball game when teams don't run the exact same crap zone look everytime.

Not to take anything away from Ridder, but you also have to take into consideration that Mariota is running an offense against 1st team defences in the preseason which should make it more challenging to go through progressions because the coverage is likely better due to personal on the field. I love what I've seen from Ridder but let's not throw the word "elite" around when the only thing we've seen is the preseason against opposing teams 2nd & 3rd defensive units. Not to mention it's been the backups of the Lions, Jets & Jags - easily some of the worst teams in the NFL.

And he looked just as good or better than ridder doing this. I think ridder has just been such a big surprise that everyone wants to rush him now.

From a future perspective it would be nice if he gets snaps during the season in order to properly evaluate him and see what we have for decision making in the future. Looks to be some good draft eligible QBs coming this year.

I don't disagree with this, but what I keep coming back to is how bad Matt Ryan looked against the Dolphins in 2016 (when we went to the Super Bowl) and how mediocre Matt Schaub looked against 2nd stringers.

If the worst thing Desmond Ridder is turns out to be "Matt Schaub," we got a good deal.  And I think he's already better than Schaubie was when he was a decade-plus vet.

Oh yeah, if Ridder gets to Shaub level career-wise, we should all be happy with that. That is plenty good enough to win a SB with a solid team around him and good coaching.

I'm just a natural skeptic, though, especially when it comes to young QBs, so I'm likely to be more hesitant lol.

I think Ridder has the potential to be a franchise QB, but...

Word out of camp was that competition between he and Mariota wasn't particularly close, and I don't think Ridder outperformed Mariota in pre-season action. Even if someone could argue they were neck and neck in pre-season, you'd still give the reins to the vet with more experience.

I don’t think the mindset is going to be “since we aren’t winning a super bowl don’t start the guy who might one day take us there”.

Getting the guy even a playoff game of experience is a huge plus for not just him but also the fanbase

Let's say he turns out to be very good at decision making, leadership, reading the field and getting balls out quickly.  What specific limitations will he have to keep him from being elite?  Does he not have a strong arm and can't get balls way down field?  Is he not tall or big / strong enough?  Too slow?  or is the sky the limit?  The man has confidence like a young brady but what would keep him from reaching that elite level (perhaps that he could never overcome)?

" finished the 2))) season with a career-high 3,426 passing yards with 26 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for two touchdowns and a career-high 349 rushing yards. He was also ranked 50th by his peers on the NFL Top 100 Players of 20??[ and was named a Pro Bowl first alternate."

Would you be happy with this ?

Amazing Vic Beasley and Cam Newton were considerably higher on the list.
