For the A
I’m wondering if this deal was agreed to during/before the trade happened. I can’t see trading those pieces knowing you’ll only have that player for 2 years. I’m excited that the Braves have locked up another position for years to come. K26dp
My guess: Olson and Oakland had explored an extension at some point, they knew the ballpark of what he wanted, and let AA know while negotiating the trade.
grandcanyonaz
They must've worked that out before the trade. Couldn't imagine giving up that many prospects for just two years.

As soon as AA congratulated Olson on the trade, he said I am calling your agent to work out long-term deal. Maybe there was some back-channeling before w/ A's but technically not allowed to negotiate w/ a player that you don't have.
Unknøwn
It's most likely as K2 said, the A's told AA what he was seeking. Olson's agent is also Chippers agent. Those two are lifelong friends.
Unknøwn
DOB said AA immediately began negotiations with BB, the agent, on Monday afternoon. AA offered 7 years, $140M and then by Tuesday morning the two had got to 8 for 168. DOB added BB is known as an agent that doesn't seek max money, he encourages his clients to take fair deals where they're comfortable and really want to be. He also said BB has told Chipper before that Olson's dream place is Atlanta. So I'm sure Chipper shared all that information.
For the A
Honestly that’s how it should be. If you’re where you want to be, fair market doesn’t hurt the team and allows for better players to be brought in.

Better agent than Glavine's, who signed Glavine to the Mets when Glavine wanted to stay in Atlanta.

Glavine got into all that Player's Union politics stuff so he probably self-imposed himself to take the highest deal. I bet if he had to do it over again he would have made a different decision.
