He must have thought the job was his just for showing up to interview lol

He did. ESPN reported that he 100% thought and told family he was flying to Minnesota to sign a contract and be introduced. The Vikings new GM was in the SF FO when Jim was there and he assumed that connection sealed it. They said Vikings ownership had questions about his personality and then with Jim's assumption that his one virtual interview sealed it made both sides uncomfortable. At the end Harbaugh goes back to Ann Arbor with his tail between his legs.

Arizona State AD has informed Herm and the team that he will remain HC. I'd be surprised if this isn't Herms last season though. The program is engulfed in NCAA violations right now and his best season is the 8-5 record he's accomplished twice. AD Ray Anderson and Herm are best buds but at some point you jeopardize your own job by keeping him in charge.

It would be difficult to find a coach now. If Auburn wants Matt Rhule then you could probably go grab him right now. Otherwise if you fire Harsin you just bite the bullet and go a year with an interim HC. Tough to scoop up someone right now.

Rumored that Steele has been approached about acting as interim. I'd rather get Rhule, he's got to know he's not going to save his job with taking a rookie QB, probably Malik Willis.

Yes but see, the problem with Auburn and their coaching searches is that the boosters and admin aren't looking for the best possible head coach, they look for someone who doesn't want control of the whole program and will allow the boosters/admin to make the decisions or sign off on assistant coaches and everything else.

They interviewed and could have hired Kirby Smart in I think 2012 and instead hired Gus Malzahn, who at that point was basically a high school coach.

They might interview Rhule but they probably won't hire him. He is very much in the mold of a Saban or Kirby, demands to have control of the program and full buy in from boosters/admin. Hard to see that happening at Auburn especially with so much admin and staff turnover.

If they fire Harsin they will also be paying millions to him AND Malzahn to no longer be there. **** they gave Malzahn that HUGE extension when he was on the hot seat basically every year. Those folks calling the shots in Auburn are incompetent.

I'm sure they would fire him with cause and at least negotiate a smaller buyout. We all know money is no concern for any SEC program though. Auburn is definitely one of the hardest places to win. They do it to themselves and it is going to be a tough sale to someone like Rhule. The type of coach needed isn't going to want that kind of meddling.

Probably why they announced the whole "separating fact from fiction" thing. If they can nail the affair rumor to him they will probably use that for cause, but I don't know how much substance there is to it though. It could be legit or some totally bogus rumor floated by a disgruntled booster.

I actually think hiring Harsin was probably a half attempt at doing something different from their past efforts, but between him being a poor cultural fit with no experience in the south and the politics at Auburn it's just not going well at all. I mean Bo Nix is a legacy Auburn kid through and through and Harsin pushed him away. Folks can say what they want about Nix but that's not a good look, that's a kid who would probably stay all 4 years at AU even if he had a decent draft projection. All the other departures just make it even worse.

Hard to imagine this ending positively. The well has already been poisoned and the results so far have been disastrous anyway. The departures and recruiting failures will set them back quite a bit. Can't imagine Rhule would want anything to do with that right now tbh, it's another big rebuild job competing directly against Saban and Kirby.

Michigan OC Josh Gattis is leaving to become Miami OC. Solid hire for Mario. Gattis was mentioned as a possible HC at Michigan if Harbaugh went to the NFL. On the flip side, Harbaugh returns to Michigan without either of his coordinators. His DC jumped to the NFL to take over the Ravens defense and now Gattis is gone.

Big hire for Mario and the Canes

Gattis told players he did not feel appreciated by Michigan administration and didn't want to be where he wasn't wanted. He cited the events of the past few weeks. Likely meaning Hatbaughs NFL pursuit and whatever happened between him and Michigan during it.

Yeah sounds like there's more going on at Michigan than just this as well. Sounds like their admin situation and relations with coaches are a mess right now. Miami definitely landed a solid OC out of this. Harbaugh has a real uphill climb for Michigan to remain competitive.
