Phillies and dbacks are tied 1-1

Mets still losing 2-0

Padres are getting smacked by the Rockies 7-3

This could be an extremely productive day for the Braves.

This indeed has been a productive day.

If we can get another 4 or 5 of these type days in a row then we will be cooking with gas

DOB talked about why Matzek isn't a closer candidate. Basically boiled down to not messing with him mentally. For a guy thats struggled and nearly retired from the yips they don't want to put that pressure on him. The role he's in now works and they pretty much determined its not worth potentially breaking him.

Fine with me. It doesn't make sense to reserve your best reliever for the 9th inning in any case.

Without looking - Who has the second highest OPS on the team?

Now, who has the highest WAR on the team?

Hint: They are the same person.

if you picked Austin Riley:

.294/.371/.533 (.903 OPS - 14th in MLB)

22 2B, 26 HR, 73 RBI

3.8 WAR

Then you have already realized how awesome he's been for us this year (13 errors aside).

I still can't believe that Snitker used his best reliever for the 6th inning last night when the game was on the line. That's a move he doesn't make last year nor the first 3 months this year. He's done a complete 180 on his bullpen usage. It's like he's finally fully brought in to the analytics and the Braves are reaping the benefits.

A lot of those errors came early in the season.

If Will Smith learns to pitch every time out like he did last night he can stay in the 9th inning.

I think this is what Snitker was saying without really saying it the other night when asked about using Rodriguez as the closer. Basically he likes being able to deploy him as needed, and that's the correct strategy.

It's not a matter of "learning", he's been a competent reliever for 8 seasons. His stuff is just starting to back up on him now, and his command isn't quite as sharp as it used to be in his heyday with the Giants. He'll likely go on being a competent reliever for several more seasons, but it seems likely that his days of being an elite high-leverage fireman are over.

But who knows, relievers are funny. Small tweeks can have huge benefits if he can find the right ones.

I meant the “learn” part tongue in cheek. We’re never gonna get the Giants guy back. But the guy we got last night is plenty good enough. It’s just a matter of confidence.
