The Atlanta Falcons could have gone in a number of different directions when the 2020 season ended, but they chose the win-now option by bringing in Arthur Smith and drafting an offensive weapon instead of a quarterback in the top five of the 2021 NFL draft.

It was reported that Smith was one of the NFL’s most coveted candidates during the offseason. Atlanta was one of seven teams to hire a new head coach, however, not everyone believes the Falcons made the right move. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora ranked the seven new head coaches hired during the offseason, with Smith coming in at No. 5.

Here’s what La Canfora had to say about Atlanta hiring the former Titans offensive coordinator to replace Dan Quinn as head coach:

Heavy is the head of those labelled a QB-guru or offensive wunderkind. People expect immediate results. And this owner resisted a full rebuild and kept Matt Ryan around (despite giving away Julio Jones for cash/cap reasons), which sends an odd signal. They have no hope of immediate success with that defense, and the QB is in decline. But the objective seems to be to win ASAP, despite a horrible cap situation and with an aging core.

Most great coaches in today’s game are offensive-minded, but it’s also true that coaches with reputations as quarterback fixers or gurus tend to be held to impossible standards. Smith wasn’t just known for turning Ryan Tannehill from journeyman to top-10 quarterback, though. Derrick Henry, the NFL’s top running back, also went from a good player with potential, to a great player during Smith’s time as Tennessee’s OC.

Atlanta addressed its offensive line and added a possible Julio Jones replacement in rookie Kyle Pitts. As for the running game, the team drafted some pieces along with the offensive line, and will rely on veteran Mike Davis to carry the load at running back.

**************************************************

As for the AS signing, Tannehill's and Henry's biggest success were the result of Smith putting in an OL scheme that created the opportunities for them to succeed and the same will need to be done here.  As for the #4 pick not being a QB, getting the top non-QB off the board was a huge move and likely one that will resonate for years if Pitts is as advertised.  As for the higher rated hires in La Canfora's rankings, #2 Urban Meyer - can't say this doesn't say 'RISK' if/when the Jags get their butts handed to them and he leaves/quits as a result of a heart condition...

Dude, that ranking is terrible.  Brandon Staley is the only one I won't argue with.  He puts Meyer 2nd, Dan "We're Gonna Eat Their Kneecaps and Crap On Their Freshly Capped Teeth (TM)" Campbell fourth, Nick "I've Literally Never Heard Of This Guy" Sirianni third.

We know about AS fifth, but then Saleh is sixth?  I won't quibble too much with Culley, except to say he edged out Urban Meyer's true spot.

This list is hilarious.  La Canfora is a joke.

I'm not sure how Urban Meyer is a better choice than AS. AS has extensive pro experience, and with his ability to make the running game much better, it improves the whole team. Running the ball effectively, should make this team able to compete consistently.

AS was a great hire.

Couldn't agree more.  Apparently Jacksonville doesn't recall Meyer's UF 'Heart Condition' after he ran from UF/SEC/Bama's dominance to Ohio State.

Aging core? The only older core players were/are Ryan, Julio and Mack and Julio and Mack are gone. No other core player is even 30. This is plain dumb. 36 is not aging for a QB like Ryan these days either.

I was thinking the same. Matthews and ryan are our oldest players aren't they?

Looking at the current roster, there are four players over 30.  Ryan (36), Lee Smith TE (33), Josh Harris (32), Eric Harris (31).

Several players are 30 (six): Patterson, Means, Mingo, McCarron, Harmon and Andrews.

Everyone else is 29 and under (three players are 29 including Jake Matthews) and the youngest is Kyle Pitts at age 20.

So this isn't about how he ranks the coaches, but about how he ranks the position they're in.

So someone who isn't expected to win quickly is in a better position that someone who is, someone with a lot of cap space is in a better position than someone who isn't.

That's why it's more about the team, cap, semi-rebuild than about the coach.

Bingo!  And he adjusts the rankings accordingly later if they don't do (or act) how he expects them to do as well!  Gotta love A-Smith though. He keeps so much on the 'down-under' and they (the writers/media) don't like it!
