Rome's season comes to an unceremonious end as the Hickory Crawdads have to follow COVID protocols and do testing and contact tracing, cancelling the final game of the season. They were rained out the night prior.

In this week's podcast, we preview Mississippi's playoff series and review the Augusta GreenJackets' 2021 season.

Mississippi evened the series at 1-1 with an 8-5 win last night. Freddy Tarnok struck out 7 in 4.1 innings, Trey Harris knocked in 3 runs, Wendell Rijo launched a 3-run homer, and Greyson Jenista also homered. Brandon White, Corbin Clouse, and Nolan Kingham starred in relief.

The series resumed Friday in Mississippi with Spencer Strider scheduled to start for the M-Braves.

The M-Braves win Game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead and come within a game of winning the Double-A South championship.

This was a wild one with some crazy swings. The Braves held a 5-4 lead until the bottom of the 8th when they exploded for 6 runs to make a 11-4. Then in the top of the 9th Xavier Edwards hit a two-out grand slam off Indigo Diaz -- who allowed a total of one earned run the entire regular season for Mississippi. Hayden Deal came on and promptly gave up a homer, a walk, and a single to bring up the go ahead run. Nolan Kingham came on and got a strikeout to finally put the game to bed, earning his second consecutive save.

Braves will go for the series win tomorrow. RHP William Woods is set to make his AA debut in the start.

How does the format work here? The winner of the South plays the winner of the North for the overall Double-A Southern league championship? Would they then play the winner of one of the other Double-A leagues?

Due to COVID, they simplified the playoff system. The two teams with the best record (in this case Mississippi and Montgomery) play a 5-game series to determine the champion.

It's confusing, but the whole league is called the Double-A South. The two divisions are the Double-A South North Division and the Double-A South South Division.

The teams used to be in the Southern League, but for legal reasons MLB cannot use that name since they took complete control over the affiliate system and the corporation called "Minor League Baseball" ceased operation.

You are much smarter than I, because most of the paragraph made my eyes cross.  GO M Braves!

That will probably be closer. I can get to Biloxi in about an hour. I use to have the Marlins AAA team in town but their owner decided to move them 2-3 years ago

Yea.. I get the feeling they may end up moving as well. They’re having problems with what they want to do with it during the offseason.
