What does Arthur Smith need to form a top 5 offense?

Recommended Posts

He's got an exceptional QB

*RB is in question

He's got an arguably elite WR corp

*OL has great potential with an addition at OG or sliding McGray/Matthews and signing/drafting the future at OG or OT

*TE could use a reliable TE2 (we should retain Graham as TE3)

Defense is obviously a talking point, but we're focused on offense in this topic.

I say we sign a veteran G for the oline or draft one Rd1-3

Sign either Jamal Williams or draft a RB Rd2-3

Sign a veteran TE or draft one Rd2-4

This leaves Rds 1, 4-6 (7 picks in all) as guys to fill in the rest potentially (assuming we sign at least one veteran to fill RB, TE, OL)

Yes our defense needs some help. But having Dean Pees will help. This league is turning offensive. Shoring up our offense will only help the defense. I know drafting DL, CB, and S is necessary, but Arthur Smith's genius on offense will help any short comings on defense with TOP.

In a perfect world we sign a veteran OL, HB, TE, and role with other positions of need in the draft. Its definitely possible with cuts and restructures of current players on the team. But either way, we have plenty of options this upcoming draft.

LG, RB, and creativity.

Yall might be surprised how much more efficient they will be with a different scheme and approach.

Firing Dirk Koetter was addition by subtraction.

We already addressed the biggest weakness which was coaching. Personnel wise, get a real RB, sure up the LG and C spots (Henny may be that guy) and we should be good to go on offense. Obviously depth will churn some each season.

I think we have decent parts.  Need a few more.  Depth on the line is the scary issue to me.

Time machine to circa 2016. The level of play of both Ryan and Jones now are simply not close to the level in 16', nor should it be as it was 5 years ago.

We need to worry about being top 15 in O & D & ST first . Every year it's post about us being top 5 in this or that. Last year it was all but guaranteed that between the continuity and amazing offseason that we would be top 10 D as well.

No big arguments other than RB. It is a talent deficient position that needs to be upgraded in short order. I am also tending toward seeing more need for change along the OL than you are. Maybe TE1 as well. Scheme may be able to free up Hurst as a receive, but I'm not sure he is the guy I want on the edge in a zone running scheme.

When it  came to yardage, we were [750 yards, sorry in the wrong column] short of the top spot on total offense. The problem lies, as it always does with Dirk's offenses, with a lack of balance, and scoring in the red zone. For Smith to get this team back to it's previous levels, all we need is someone who can scheme a competent running game and get guys into the end zone and finish drives.

If Smith can do that, he will not only win more games overall, he'll help out the defense  tremendously, who were exposed way too often under DK, and his complete lack of concern about how his decision making affected other aspects of the team.
