Because they’ve got Will Smith on the roster?

Right. But going into spring training last year Will Smith wasn't even in line to be the closer. Snitker said Melancon was the closer. So why would they change after Melancon had a great year and Smith struggled?

Also, it's not like Melancon is guaranteed to get the bulk of the save opportunities with San Diego either. They've got other options in Pomeranz and Pagan too.

I don't know what was so hard to understand about what I said.

I think he's just saying Smith isn't a lock to be the closer since he lost the job (though due to COVID) last season and wasn't very good once he returned.

I'm just pointing out that last year when spring training started Melancon was closer, not Smith. I don't know why the Braves would change. But none of that matters now.

Ah see I was under the impression Smith was supposed to be the closer then missed because of COVID.

I was too because of the contract Smith was given. But I distinctly remember having the discussion about it on another message board because we were trying to figure out how to setup the Braves roster for The Show video game and the dude linked to a DOB tweet where Snitker said Melancon was the closer. You can probably find it in the spring training thread from last year that was posted here but I don't feel like going through that thread to try to make a completely meaningless point. My main point was Melancon isn't guaranteed to get the bulk of the saves with the Padres so it seems unlikely that played a role in him signing with them.

You’re literally talking about an innocuous comment from a year ago regarding a situation that has no bearing on what is happening on the team now. Smith was given that contract for a reason.

Ok. Like I said, none of this matters. Melancon isn't here anymore and we don't know the reason why.

I believe in "if it ain't broke don't fix it." I would have left Melancon as closer because it was working just fine. But that's just me. Contracts be ****ed.

Don’t know if it was talked about but I read an article that said MLB made an adjustment to the baseball. Its weight was decreased a tenth of an ounce. It’s supposed to reduce distance of fly balls.

I read that they're expecting fly balls to carry 5 feet less this year. Of course they have nothing to base that on but their projections of what they think will happen. If that is true and fly balls are reduced by no less than 5 feet I would expect we'll see very little difference in results of fly balls and the difference between homeruns and non-homeruns. I think the bigger effect, if any, would be how that difference in weight might affect the way pitches move.

Mariners president Kevin Mather burned the place down in one interview. He said Kyle Seager is overpaid and won't be in Seattle after this year and openly admitted their top prospect won't be on the roster in April after he turned down a club friendly 6 year deal. Lots of upset people in Seattle including the players.
