Baseball really needs a salary cap and salary floor.

After missing last season battling colon cancer, Trey Mancini has reported to O's camp and intends to play a full season.

I'm all for chaining Mookie to the ground next time we play.

Melancon deal with SD was actually 2 years not 3. The 2nd year is an option year. He gets $3M in 2021. DOB said Braves could have matched that from what he's heard but Melancon is from out west and belief is he may have wanted to go home.

Well that sucks, but understandable.

That is a bad deal to me. He has all the tools sure, but how do you know he will: 1 stay healthy, 2 play to his full potential. There are many a player that after their first year or 2 look like the next great player who all of a sudden fall off the map, Jason Hayward, Jeff Francoir(sp) just to name 2 off the top of my head.

Padres are going to regret at least one of those big contracts. It's not likely that both guys are going to be valuable through the duration of their contracts. It's hard to be great for another 10 years, much less 14. Padres are going all in now, but 5 years down the road, I think they'll regret at least one of these contracts.

The Athletic had a story on how it might fall apart this morning. The Padres are in a small market and have only drawn 3 million in attendance one time in their history. Their TV deal is modest and locked in through 2031. Theyre developing a Battery like place outside Petco but its not expected to provide a boost in the next 10 years. Its also not expected to be as profitable as The Battery according to The Athletic. They might eventually have to dump some guys to avoid a financial catastrophe. Its all about win right now because the future might get ugly.

I mean, up until last season, Hosmer was pretty terrible for them. Entirely possible he reverts back to the low .700 OPS player he was his first two seasons in SD.

He just turned 22.  There is really no way to know if he will continue to develop into an elite player.  Everyone thought Francouer and Hayward were going to develop into elite players.  Thankfully the Braves didn't extend either one of them.

With him being 22, they didn't have to do this. They could still "win now", because they would have control for quite a while. Just seems like a potential disaster.

First day of workouts and Realmuto fractured his thumb. Status for Opening Day is in doubt.

It's going to bother him all season too. The torque you put on your thumbs when swinging if incredible. It's going to be worse if it was his catching hand thumb. Those 90+mph pitches suck on the best of days.
