It's a lot to put on a player to say something like this, but Acuna is better in his early 20s than Chipper was. I can't compare 22 to 22 since Chipper missed that year. His power and speed weren't on Acuna's level at that age, though.

Oh he's most definitely is. Look at how much better Acuna was in his rookie year at age 20 compared to Chipper's rookie year at age 23.

  • Chipper Jones - 1995 - .265/.353/.450 (.803) - 140 G, 602 PA, 524 AB, 87 R, 139 H, 22 2B, 3 3B, 23 HR, 86 RBI, 73 BB, 99 SO, 8 SB, 4 CS
  • Ronald Acuna - 2018 - .293/.366/.552 (.917) - 111 G, 487 PA, 433 AB, 78 R, 127 H, 26 2B, 4 3B, 26 HR, 64 RBI, 45 BB, 123 SO, 16 SB, 5 CS

Chipper had an amazing career but Acuna is pacing himself to be considered one of the all-time greats if he can stay healthy and keep him this level of performance over another 15 years.

Chipper is an all time great. If it wasn’t for injuries he would have went down as the greatest 3B ever. Because he definitely would have joined the 500 club

Chipper is definitely an all-time great. I meant Acuna is pacing to be one of those guys in the same breathe of a Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron. That type of career.

I mean, I could argue Acuna’s 2019 was nearly equal to Chipper’s MVP season.  And his 2020 is on a better pace than last year

Acuna is on a special trajectory.  Generational talent:

162 Game Averages:

  1. Mike Trout: 39 HR, 104 RBI, 25 SB, 123 Runs, 179 Hits & 1.002 OPS
  2. Acuna Jr: 42 HR, 100 RBI, 30 SB, 125 Runs, 181 Hits & .910 OPS
  3. Mickey Mantle: 36 HR, 102 RBI, 10 SB, 116 Runs, 169 Hits & .977 OPS
  4. Barry Bonds: 41 HR, 104 RBI, 28 SB, 121 Runs, 151 Hits & .977 OPS

Brooks Robinson was special as well

Brooks Robinson is unquestionably the best defensive 3rd baseman to ever play but he wasn't anywhere near the offensive weapon of the other guys I mentioned. Robinson was only a career .267/.322/.401 (.723) hitter. That's terrible. We're talking about like Ozzie Smith level bad offensively. Robinson is in the HOF only because of his defense.

Acuna is turning into what most analysts projected Andruw would be.  Jones became a lazy hitter who always tried to hit a HR.

Ozzie Smith, Ivan Rodriguez & Andruw Jones are the best defensive players of my lifetime.  Andrew should get HOF consideration but won’t IMO

BTW: Andruw Jones son is the #5 prospect in the 2022 class

IMO there's Chipper, Schmidt, Eddie Mathews and George Brett. Those 4 are the best 3rd basemen in MLB history. I think there's a gap after those 4.

I guess that depends if you are counting Alex Rodriguez as a 3B or a SS.

I always think about him as a SS because it's always weird to me to think that he played for the Yankees for as long as he did. Just doesn't seem like he was there for that long. But he played nearly the equal amount of games at 3B and SS so you can easily classify him at either position. Surprisingly his defense was much much worse at 3B than it was at SS. That's surprising given there's less ground to cover playing 3B.

His time at 3rd base was when he was older and when injuries started taking their toll on him. It's understandable that his defensive metrics dropped while he was over there.

His first year playing 3B was 28 years old. He was really good that year and then immediately dropped off a cliff defensively.
