CBS - JULIO Not A HOF Lock....Yet

Recommended Posts

Is Julio Jones a 'lock' to make the Hall of Fame?

Julio Jones has already established himself as the best wide receiver in Falcons history, and he's been among the top players in the NFL for the past decade. The only true question left regarding his career is whether or not he will end up enshrined in Canton.

CBSSports.com writer Bryan DeArdo recently ran through each NFL team and listed the player on their roster most likely to make it to the Hall of Fame. His pick for the Falcons was Jones, although he did mention that quarterback Matt Ryan is building a good case as well. Despite all that accomplished, however, DeArdo does not yet list Jones as a "lock" for the Hall of Fame, but he says he's close.

"The Falcons actually have two players who are on the Hall of Fame 'bubble,'" DeArdo writes. "While Jones is closing in on a Hall of Fame career, the same can be said of quarterback Matt Ryan, a former league MVP who is 10th all-time in career passing yards. But the nod here went to Jones, a seven-time Pro Bowler who has led the league in receiving on two separate occasions. But as good as Jones has been, he will likely need a few more prolific seasons to be considered a Hall of Fame 'lock,' as he is currently 25th in career receiving yards."

Both Jones and Ryan could well end up in the Hall of Fame with a few more seasons at the pace they are on, but they are already undoubtedly two of the greatest players to ever suit up for Atlanta.

Patrick Mahomes is a flash in the pan and will not be a HOFer.

Mahomes already has an NFL Season MVP, SB MVP, and a SB ring.

Has there ever been a QB or player with all of those achievements that has never made the HOF?

All Mahomes needs is more seasons to build on his stats because he's so young. One more Season MVP or SB win would secure him 100% even if his career was to be cut short somehow like what happened to Terrell Davis.

Theisman maybe?

If Julio were to retire tomorrow he probably isn't a lock, nothing controversial here IMO. The benchmark for WR's is going up and up.

I think Julio would still be a lock, just maybe not 1st ballot.

You can't talk about the absolute best NFL WRs of the past 10 years without mentioning Julio as one of the 1st names.

You could say the same for Dale Murphy in the '80's, and you know how that has turned out. (I believe JJ should be a lock, but you never know with these HOF things.)

I mean I agree, and there is no doubt that Julio will be in the HOF but I'm just playing devil's advocate here. Right now he's nearly a 100 TD's short of TO's career mark and he took 3 years to get in.

I'm sorry, but I will always point out the fact that if they elected Saints LB Rickey Jackson to the HOF, who played on a historically bad Saints teams of the 80s and 90s, then why not anyone else?

Because the voters are full of ****.

Agree. Way too much subjectivity rather than going by merit. Just a glorified popularity contest.

I'd say Julio is a lock, just maybe not first ballot.  When you discuss era's, as the HoF does, you cannot discuss this era of WR without Julio Jones.  Every single "elite" WR in the league is always compared to Julio.  Who is better Nuk or Julio?  Thomas or Julio?  AB or Julio?  The common denominator is always Julio.  He is in.

Also lol @ Jerry Rice

Dale Murphy was actually not all that great over his career. Very good but not great. Andruw Jones is far more deserving than Murph.

The reason why it took TO 3 years to get in the hall is because the media who are HOF voters pretty much hate him.

They made him sweat it out just to get at him. Which was why TO refused to attend the actual HOF ceremony and held his own to return the big F' you back to them.

Julio is well liked.
