Its 2020 with all its historic glory and despite pandemic, the country is evolving.

Everything is changing and Atlanta, as a leader in the South and state of mind of America today, is in the middle and forefront of the discussion and change.

Which leads to the question, "is it time for a name change for the Braves?"  How long will our baseball team reference a historically marginalized segment of the population as part of their marketing brand?

Is there a reason why the Braves should keep the name in such a socially aware and forward thinking city?

My grandfather was 1/2 Native American and loved the Braves. Instead, I think butthurt people should stop being opportunist to push their agenda. There is nothing insensitive or demeaning with the name Braves.

Not arguing or debating on this forum either; I've shared my thoughts.

Everything and everyone is now racist!! Jesus Christ people need to stop being offended by everything that has absolutely NOTHING to do you with. This has just gotten out of control. But this is the world that liberals want. They're the most intolent group of people on earth.

Where does it stop before all of a sudden we're all referred to as numbers because words are "offensive?"

That's ****** up....

That's not the history behind it. The history behind it was a BLACK Florida football player starting it in the 90s.

But because it was used as something else decades earlier it means it's racist and we have to stop saying it. It's absolutely ridiculous!

I have no idea who posted that, but it's wrong. The gator thing started in 1981 due to an usher. And that person got it from a Jerry Reed song.

Absolutely. This came up after a child died from a gator attack at Walt Disney World a few years ago. It's a mortifying historical fact.

Now they are talking about banning "war eagle." It has its origins in the civil war apparently. Hate to see it!

Yep. Everything and everyone is offensive and racist. I'm legit ******* serious when I say pretty soon all names will be defined as offensive and we'll stop having to use them and let everyone be defined by numbers. It's a sad ******* world we live in.

I'm aware of the Jerry Reed song and no one knows if the Amos talked about in the song is white or black and we can't ask Jerry Reed himself cause he's dead.

I dont think the Braves name has ever been an issue. The logo and chop are what people find issues with. A Brave is just a peaceful native American warrior. Last October the Cherokee Eastern Band Chief acthally said they've never taken issue with the name. It was the chop. To me its just like if the Nats were the Washington Marines or something.

Heres his quote.

Eastern Band Principal Chief Richard Sneed told the AJC that if the Braves consult with him, he’ll say that he has no problem with the team name — which honors the warrior spirit — but it’s time to hang up the tomahawk chop.

That's actually very cool.

It would be great if the team could somehow embody that spirit in its logos and merchandising.

Which brings us to the other part of the equation, the city of Atlanta.  Do the Braves imagery and merchandising gel with the spirit and evolution of a city who's branding has always been change, upward, flight, and an eye on the future?  The whole Braves imagery is beginning to seem really outdated and stagnant and its a carryover from other towns that in a historical context dont mirror Atlanta at all.

Here's the thing about the name "Braves" -- it's a tribute to a corrupt political machine that operated in a city that the team has never actually played in.

Most of you know that the team was called several things before it was called the Braves. It was first called the Red Stockings, then the Beaneaters, then the Doves, then the Rustlers, then the Braves.

Calling the team he Red Stockings was an attempt to steal the identity of the first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, which temporarily de-certified in 1871. The manager and a good chunk of the players of that team moved to Boston to start up the the team that would become the Braves, and the press just brought the name with them.

Not too long after, the press and fans started calling the team the Beaneaters, which was a longtime nickname for Bostotonians. Note: the team itself was only ever officially called the Boston National League Base Ball Club, and didn't take a stance on the team nickname until 1912.

In 1907, the team was purchased by George and John Dovey, and the press started calling the team the Doves after them. After George died suddenly at the age of 46, John sold the team in 1911 to a businessman named William Russell. To keep with the recent tradition, the press started calling the team the Rustlers.

That didn't last long either because Russell died a year after buying the team. The trustees sold controlling interest to New York real estate mogul James Gaffney. Gaffney was a colorful character, and had ties to the Tammany Hall political machine that essentially ran the New York City government during most of the late 19th and early 20th century. Tammany Hall got its start as a secret society in 1772, as a club for "pure Americans". Like a lot of old American secret societies, they appropriated Native American symbols and imagery. The name Tammany is a bastardization of the name of Chief Tamanend of the Lenni-Lenape nation.

When Gaffney bought the club he gave the team its first official nickname, the Braves, as an homage to Tammany Hall.

So yeah, the name is racist. But even beyond that, the name is stupid and out of date. Why the **** should a baseball team in Atlanta continue to honor a racist, corrupt political machine from New York City?

What's even sadder is that so many people would rather hold on to racist symbols and terminology rather than try to build a more inclusive society.

Renaming the Atlanta Braves would cause exactly zero hardship to fans. It would make many fans less ashamed of supporting the team (*raises hand*). It would make a ton of money for the team in new merchandising sales. And finally, a new name would be more welcoming to potential new fans.

And if it offends some racists along the way, so much the better.

So someone that likes the Braves name is racist? That's such a bad take.

Not as bad as "liking" it because they can't bother with empathy for others.

Excuse me but when I think of the name "Braves" the last thing I think of is INDIANS or NATIVES. Has nothing to do with not having "empathy" for others and everything to do with I'm not a racist **** and don't asssociate every single ******* word and phrase to be racist. I guarantee every single person on this planet is guilty of using at least 1 of the words or phrases I posted in that one post in this thread and if you say no then your a ******* liar.

That's the problem with this ******* country. Every one is looking for **** to be offended about when it's so ****ining ridiculous. When I think of Braves the ONLY thing I think of is baseball. That's it and that's why it's not ******* racist or offensive.
