Why did our defense look like a dumpster fire weeks 1-8?

Coaching, lack of preperation, lack of execution, lack of talent.

You don't play like the worst defense in the history of the NFL without it being a complete and total team effort.

I'll never believe that the Falcons have a lack of talent like EVER... Maybe depth of talent? Sure, now that one I could agree with. But just look at all the questionable coaching and roster moves that have taken place since 2016? DQ has literally proven that he's no better than Gus Bradley. At least I think that's the guy's name who was the first DC from that tree to be thought to have greatness in him. Nope. And just like he didn't neither does Quinn. Funny how our franchise always talks Patriots and yet seems to consistently emulate the Jaguars! Why may as well move the team to some small country town if we can't find any better coaching leadership than this smh

Quinn made two big moves last offseason; become defensive coordiator and take Beasley Under his wing. Result was 1-7. Quinn shoulda been on the bus with Beasley

Quinn did not take Beasley under his wing.  He said he was going to, then Beasley stayed away.  He reported when mandatory.  It was too late then because of team activities.

Falcons ran a 3-4 that looked like a middle school team running it for the first time. You had two defensive ends in takk and beasley who didn't care and just got blown up on every run play.

The defense was trying to make Beasley and takk into von Miller and DeMarcus ware , but it wasn't even close.

Once falcons went back to 4-3, it simplified everything and helped the defensive ends get real pressure

This isn't true, Beasley actually chose to train away from DQ last off season. Not defending DQ, but not gonna use another person's fat to fry him either... If Beas is a bust, it's on him

One thing that our guys need to do... and this is solely on each individual player, is to make sure they learn their respective assignments & prepare themselves mentally for all possible scenarios that could come up in a game.

This is what separates some guys from playing at a high level to looking lost & giving up big plays. Coaching is crucial as you present scenarios to the players.  But film study & mental preparedness are equally crucial.

physically, we look pretty good on paper.

Well I was waiting to see if anyone else went into more detail. I dont have the time to do a fancy post with photos to show what I am talking about. In short the players were forgetting assignments, not communicating on the field, and not using common sense. Run fits were bad, most of this was ishmal and cambell. Things i saw I saw Ish over run "open doors" that he was supposed to fill and not fill to take on a lead blocker. I also so very slow reaction to what the play was. Same thing for cambell simply taking himself out of plays created huge running lanes.  Passing game, I saw Oliver just doing frankly weird high school ****. I remember a few games seeing Trufant play spot drop coverage where he was covering grass the entire play. There were inside breaking routes from the number 2 receiver that were not signaled to the line backers .

It was just no teamplay even on a basic level. It looked like something was just missing.

It was so sad we had 5 pre season games last year and until the bye week it looked like we never even practiced together as a team.

Quinns idea of rest everyone in pre season has to stop. I'd rather have injuries in pre season when we have time to sign players then have a string of horrible injuries the first part of the season AND our team be completely out of sync cause they did not play together.

Last off season we were so excited about Dan Quinn being our defensive coordinator. We thought our defense was going to be awesome. Then weeks 1-8 happened. Our defense looked worse than I've ever seen in all my 27 years of being a Falcons fan. I don't think that Dan Quinn forgot how to coordinate. He took over play calling in 2016 and did well.

What do you think caused our defense to look like trash weeks 1-8? Do you think there was something going on behind the scenes or in the locker room? Do you think it's because Dan Quinn change things up? Do you think the players weren't getting along?

After the injury bug hit, Quinn went vanilla and soft with the defensive calls. Should've done just the opposite. Mayhem is the only prescription for a defense in that situation. Cause as much of it as you can. After the break they got aggressive and with the return of Debo at the same time they were able to turn it around. Quinn needs to self evaluate more often and adjust when needed. He seems to have a "this is the way we play try to beat us" mindset and the league has long since caught up to the old Seattle defensive strategy he employs.

QB's read his defense from the huddle!

Ok, but I still say that that's a neg for coach. he states he wants to take Beas Under his wing as one of his sig moves for the offseason and Beas doesn't even show

Respectably disagree.  This is not high school where they can kick you off the team, put you in a class you hate, make you stay after school, call your parents, and send you to the principles office.  When workouts are voluntary and a player has been informed he will get individual and focused coaching, and he chooses to not show, that is on him.  The Falcons, and HC Quinn have no power to exert pressure over voluntary workouts.  Beasley had a professional manager and easy access to attorneys.  He is a grown man responsible for his actions and responsible for managing his adult life.

If you want to say Quinn took the wrong approach to entice Beasley to participate, I will consider that.  If you want to say the Falcons should have benched him or even tried to deal him immediately following his rejection of Quinn's offer, I will consider.  I will not consider that this was more on Quinn than Beasley.

Agree with you 100%. DQ still hung his hat on Beasley's rack. It was a terrible call. My point isn't about Beas. I'm talking DQ's short-comings

100% coaching.

We have way too much talent to be as bad as we were in the first half. That falls on Quinn’s shoulders.

The position coaches were the problem: specifically the Secondary and DL.  Once Quinn took over DL and Morris the secondary, the pieces suddenly fit
