No one plays the predraft game better than Dimitroff. That's why you see him interviewed so much this time of the year.

Not buying it.  If anything it’s to get teams to come after our pick at 16.

Smoke.

There is an easy out in Ryan’s contract after 2020.  Saves us 17 mill in CAP space if they went that route

Check again.

potential out would be AFTER 2021 season and Ryan would still have a negative cap hit of about $10mm.   You could designate June 1st and it would be $5mm.  - and that assumes Sportstrac updated this AFTER signings of Fowler and Gurley or Falcons didn’t use Ryan’s contract in those signings.

Matt Ryan is not cuttable for 2020 nor 2021 season - period, end of story.

“On Complex’s Load Management podcast, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport called Thomas Dimitroff “strangely interested” in quarterbacks this year and suggested that the Falcons could jump up in the first round to take one. putting them in the same class as the Brady-less Patriots and final-year-Brees Saints. No, you’re not hallucinating.“

Thoughts?

Well Schaub sucks so.......

That might be the strategy but no other of the 31 NFL GMs believes Dimitroff and Falcons are in the QB business.

Well, they shouldn't, but it's a corollary to "it only takes one" on a team reaching for a player.  A bunch of non-QB teams need to join TD in threatening so that all four QBs go in the top ten. It probably won't work, but it's always worth a shot.

Also, I do think Mahomes has changed the league's thinking at least somewhat here. And that helps with the ruse.

Having said that, if at least three people on a message board see through the ploy, it's doomed to fail.

Look at the post 6/1 numbers.  He is totally cuttable next year.

First off....its good to see TD acting like the experienced GM he is -supposed- to be.

Second.... there -are- a couple ways that drafting a rookie QB makes sense.  First is the salary cap.  Look at how bad off the Falcons are when it comes to signing FA's....and the future stands to be worse, with all this kicking-the-can-down-the-road cap management TD is practicing.

Then there is Ryan's age.... you have to think TD just might be willing to move on from Ryan while Ryan still has some value.  Especially when you consider that there are two teams in particular that would want Ryan:  the Raiders' Mike Mayock and John Gruden are big fans of Ryan....and, well,  you would have to think NE with Belichick would be interested in a player like Ryan, especially after Ryan put up the numbers he did last season, despite the pressures, hits, sacks, lack of a run game and defense.....

It would be just like Belichik to out-manuever TD, get a proven MVP QB, and get the Falcons to pay for a huge chunk of Ryan's cap hit....plus put NE in position to win another Super Bowl.

Oh yeah.... having a rookie QB might help buy the current coaches and management a couple years.  Even Patrick Mahomes took a couple years to develop, you know?

I made a thread about these same facts a few weeks ago and the mods shut it down. The notion of the future seems to be taboo on this board

Td admitted to scouting QBs every year to keep up with trends and eye for talent. Rapoports is just jumping to conclusions, and one of worst reporters. Pauline is the guy to listen to for us.  Every team has a #1 reporter to trust, ours has proven time and time again to be Tony pauline.

I'm going with this.  Conduct scouting and interviews with QBs all the time, especially when in a few years it will be time to get a new one.  See how those particular QBs panned out and compare to your reports/interviews with them, use that information to make the best decision on the next QB of the future.

How the **** is a team supposed to cut their QB post June 1st? That money wouldn't do us any good at all even if we did because free agency would basically be over. But sure, I guess it's 'possible'

It’s irrelevant if your QB is already on the squad.  At that point you’re just trying to reduce the dead money.

And we can use the 17 million on any number of things.  Extend one of our own FA’s or add 2-3 mid level starters like we did Bailey last year.  Are we not going to put Trufant’s 10 million to good use this year?

KADY BAR THE DOOR!!!  This is NOT what people in here want to hear.  At all.  God forbid we should even think on moving on beyond St. Matt.  I said it before and I'll say it again... If we could draft God as our next QB, clowns in here would burn down the city.  Not quite sure if we would have blown a 28-3 lead had we had God as QB though...   But don't fret, MR is a hall of famer... 28-3 or not.

Are you trying to insinuate Matt Ryan is at fault for us not winning the super bowl?

Did you even watch the game?

just adding another log to the fire for a team who wants a QB and might consider trading up for one. Make them think you might go QB but, you could be talked out of it for the right price.

Are there really teams FO's out there this dumb? If so we need to load up the truck and move to Beverly, Hills that is...
