Many just don’t respect people, generally.

”Hey look, there’s a bunch of poor, hungry people. We have the means to easily help them and make things better for everyone.”

”No! They have to EARN it!”

Oh just give them anything they want. Give them a Ford, that will soon be insufficient. Then it must be a Mercedes. Entitlement has no limits. We are meant as people to make our own way by getting off our a-- and working for our dreams. At least so many immigrants are striving to get to our opportunities. They traverse a 1000 miles in many cases.

By all means, this should be the standard.

Yes. It’s called sacrifice.  Noticed you failed to mention ANYTHING else I said in my post.  You have NO leg to stand on.  I’m sorry you have so little motivation to elevate yourself in life and want to whine, cry and pout like the overgrown child demanding others take care of you.

He, I, and others in this thread all make really good livings. Living that we worked hard to get. And we are saying we are willing to sacrifice so other people can have a better chance in life. WTH are you talking about?

I don't see him whining, crying, or pouting. He said he makes a good living. I do too. I benefitted from highly subsidized education myself, and I support subsidizing education.

He has, however, mercilessly mocked some people in this thread.

Can you imagine the kind of h***scape that would result if any country actually had tuition free education nationwide?

:looks at Germany:

Oh, nevermind.

Sure... sure, but they probably balance it by not having universal healt...

Oh, nevermind.

Why can’t THEY sacrifice to elevate themselves??

And no YOU think EVERYONE ELSE should pay for someone else’s things because those people lack the drive to put in the effort to invest in themselves.

As I stated, there are many means of paying for your secondary education.  **** in Georgia alone you can get your tuition paid for with a B average in HS.  I came from pretty humble beginnings and I did it and now have a successful career as an engineer.

Gee I wonder where that money comes from that pays for your tuition if you make a B average in HS...

I think we should all help pay for the betterment of society, which works towards all of our benefit. And I think we especially should do so because the modern economic situation has put people in essentially unescapable positions. The idea that, under current conditions, everyone can simply work a little bit harder and achieve real “success,” is a myth, based on an idealized notion of this country that hasn’t existed for quite some time.

I paid much more extra tax (compared to the US) in the last 20 years than I would have ever amassed in college tuition.

You’re literally arguing against the very system that exists in your own country and against people who are saying they would happily pay more taxes in exchange for tuition free college.

Sounds to me like you’re just trolling.

The people who benefit from a free education would end up paying that money back in the form of taxes when they get good jobs after they graduate.

We don’t have to speculate on how this works.  Germany has been doing it successfully for decades.

I am trolling a bit, that is a given. But financially, I and most Germans with a college degree would be better off financially in the US system than in Germany after 20 years of work. And it is not even close. Essentially after considering all taxes, the high VAT and energy prices I would get 2 dollars in the Us for every euro I make in Germany.

Yeah it’s called a state lottery.  If you choose to play it you’re subsidizing that scholarship.

Fantastic. So we've established now that you have no problem with public monies to subsidize education. It's just a matter of the funding source. Glad we got that clarified.

So your argument against tuition free college is that there are already ways to get tuition free college.

Huh.

Ok, I get your sentiment and it seems pure in nature. If we ALL become PHD doctors , lawyers, or techs of some kind. WHO will pick up the garbage or cook fries and burgers. There are 1000's of menial jobs to be manned. Not all have the will or the want to be the best they can be; simple fact but true. We can all look about us and see those that want a doobie and some Boones. If we want this utopia of everyone has the same, then China would welcome us into their fold. If any of China's "citizens" COULD tell you, it wouldn't fit your "dreams" for your society

There are other means than having the government (AKA the American people) foot the bill.  We already have a tremendous amount of debt and are overtaxed.

Why not legalize marijuana nationwide? Tax the **** out of it to pay for a college fund.  More state should open casinos. Taxes proceeds to high heaven and supplement it that way.  Just because you want to fund other people education doesn’t mean we all do.
