Mr. Hoopah! 79,711
Also, sorry, but nazis in Camp Auschwitz hoodies and waving the confederate flag inside the Capitol that had plans to kidnap and/or execute members of Congress aren’t victims of the liberal agenda, they absolutely are a big deal, and the incoming Biden administration, which will no doubt be terrible in innumerable ways, does not excuse/minimize 1/6 and what’s been threatened for next week. Had they succeeded in violently overthrowing our government, we would be further away, not closer, to a democratic socialist utopia. I think the time would be better spent addressing the societal conditions that make these fringe groups seem appealing to growing numbers of people. Like to me Qanon is a symptom, not the disease. The bolded we need to do because it is the humane and equitable thing to do, generally. If that alleviates the problem of Qanon and the gathering momentum of the white supremacist movement, great, but I'm not assuming that is the only thing driving those movements, nor should they be the reason for doing the right thing. We should just work to make the world better for people, just because we should. And, generally, you treat the symptoms as well as the disease when you want to heal someone. I think we can treat the symptoms here without broad new laws that increase the police state and, indeed, white supremacy/right-wing violence in the police state is a huge part of the problem. But I also don't think we can ignore the symptoms thinking it is enough to focus on the disease because the symptoms, you know, can kill the host. Mr. Hoopah!

I agree those are probably the main issues driving those movements, but not necessarily the only ones. And yes, of course we should address those issues foremost, preferably with aggressive left/socialist policies, for myriad reasons. But if we wait on those policy fixes (which we both know are little more than a hopeful dream at this point) to fix the movements, we'll soon find the movements make those policies even more unlikely to be adopted. It's a stupid ******* conundrum and there is no easy answer. We're not going to fix decades of societal and economic decline anytime soon, given the massive roadblocks from both major parties, and we still need to address the very real threat of right-wing fascist movements. Not sure what to do other than to say I fully agree we don't need new surveillance/counter-terrorism/policing laws.
