jidady
Well, I can make you feel a bit better about the situation. Based on what's happened in Asia, it's reasonable to expect normalcy to return in two months, less if containment happens more efficiently. If we're still shut out in July, thousands of people are dead, and sports is a trivial concern. youngbloodz

There is a vaccine for the flu.

It's too soon to know that, but most pandemics become less problematic over time. Some receive cures while others like HIV gain treatments that negate many of the most dangerous aspects. Unknøwn
From the sounds of it, teams will be working out in team facilities. Dbacks say they'll be staying at the facility where the team can control the sterilization. Dbacks officials saying the plan is to basically start the schedule in progress. For example, if the season starts April 17, the Braves would host SF for Opening Day. MLB will then consider whether to add the missed games to the end or just play a short season. We'll more than likely just do what happened in 1995. In 95 they just picked up the schedule where it would have been at that point in the season and made sure everyone played 144 games. They didn't bother with making up the missed games. That is what I'm expecting to happen this time around as well. It's the easiest thing to do. Augustadawgchop
It’s weird to me that an authoritarian China hasn’t put boots on the ground in these open air markets to stop this...seems like every few years a new strain emerges there from the same practice of killing and preparing different species in close proximity. On another note, has Zach Evans made a move yet? Been too busy with grad school to stay up on recruiting. Hope you’re all safe and sound; wash those hands
Unknøwn
MLB has granted permission for players to return home. They can go home, stay in team facilities or go to their teams home city.

K26dp
While all the craziness has been going on the last two days, the Braves did make a couple of roster moves. RHP Patrick Weigel and C Alex Jackson were optioned to the minors. Making the Squad page has been updated, maybe for the last time in awhile. Unknøwn
Some in the league believe they might be delayed till Memorial Day. Most believe theres no way there will be a full 162 game schedule. Right now the tentative date is April 9 for Opening Day if MLB is able to stick to a 2 week delay.

Jesus Christ!!! I read today that they were talking about hopefully getting under way at the beginning of May. Man this is all incredible!! jidady
America's probably shut down for five weeks, give or take a week. So, mid- to late-April sounds right. But teams may need to give players a few days to warm back up again. If not, we could see a lot of injuries. This is going to be a weird baseball season. Schedules are going to be imbalanced, too. I wonder if maybe they would decide to do like 144 game season and just remake the schedules the best they could? Probably not feasible to completely upend the MLB schedule. Unknøwn
CDC is now recommending gatherings of 50 or more people be postponed for 8 weeks. MLB could be looking at a mid May Opening Day.

AUTiger7222
I'm starting to believe that many people here in the US had it back in November and December and we just didn't know about it at the time. All the symptoms where there but doctors didn't know what to look for. I know me, my mom and my girlfriend all had the same symptoms. Makes me hopeful that maybe we've already seen the peak of it here and we could soon start seeing things turn for the better. I mean that would be the optimistic view on things, but one can hope. Here in Alabama we went from nothing to over 24 confirmed cases in about 48 hours. I'm writing about this extensively right now. The "flattening the curve" term has become the catchphrase of the moment, but I can describe the situation in simpler terms. A pandemic that has a growth rate of 10% will go from 100 infected to 260 (rounding up) in 10 days. At a 50% growth rate, the number of infected people after 10 days is 5,767. Presuming that the US is being honest about its numbers, our overall growth rate the last two days is 27.5%. That would indicate almost 43k more infections over the next 10 days, based on the current reported number of 3,774. In a month, we'd pass 5.5 million. The math is messier than that due to locality, so I'm being general here. The point is that the high infection rate explains why the CDC reacted as they did. Today's guidelines are a health organization telling politicians to STFU and stay out of its business. Also, fwiw, the first reported case of Coronavirus came on New Year's Eve. I think what you reference later is that we've had a terrible flu and cold season, too. The flu shot was particularly ineffective this year due to the number and nature of the most viral strains.
