Don’t know how relevant or accurate this person is but

So basically what any true Falcon fan already knew...defense has ALWAYS been the issue holding this team back.  Arthur even knew and that's why he hired DQ to fix it.  Instead he got a Seahawks fraud

Those were points per drive for our offense the past 4 seasons.  Here is our defense the past 4 seasons. 2019 - 26th 2018 - 29th 2017 - 18th 2016 - 27th

Sounds about right. 2017-2019 hurts though. Defensive Minded HC with a top 5 Offense each season. This is what we expected from the offense, but the defense has been disappointing. Especially Coaching and Scheme Wise.

Didn’t we have a top 10 defense in 2017?

Yes we did.   Ranked 9th and in 2011, they ranked 12th.

From PFR - our offense - defense rank (yards) by year then our offense-defense (points):

(1st one reads - Offense ranked 6th in yards - defense ranked 24th, offense ranked 10th in points, defense ranked 11th)

6 - 24 (2008) 10-11

16-21 (2009) 13-14

16-16 (2010) 5-5

10-12 (2011) 7-18

8-24 (2012) 7-5

14-27 (2013) 20-27

8-32 (2014) 12-27

7-16 (2015) 21-14

2-25 (2016) 1-27

8-9 (2017) 15-10

6-28 (2018) 10-25

Glad I put the disclaimer about the accuracy or relevance of the person who made the tweet

But, but they said it was Sark's fault...

Does yards per drive really tell you anything in itself?  I mean you can have a 98 yard drive, but there is a big difference in the success on that drive based on if you get or don't get that final yard.  Statistics can be deceiving.  With that being said, we have had plenty of good offenses in the Matt Ryan led era.  Defense has definitely been the issue in this run.

Starting in 2008, Matt Ryan's rank in QBR by season: No. 3, 11, 3, 5, 6, 6, 9, (9, 1), 5, 9

The seasons in parentheses are the two that Ryan had Kyle Shanahan as OC. The idea that Shanahan made Ryan is ridiculous

Ryan has also been in the upper tier in Success Rate and Expected Points Added throughout his career. That means he keeps his offenses maximizing on their field position and scoring points at a higher rate than average quarterbacks.

This is why I can’t hate on DQ. What have we invested into this defense other than draft picks? The Seahawks nailed some draft picks for sure but the singed Avril, they signed Bennett.

They added very good NFL players to that team.

Weve added nothing to this defense while DQ has been here other than role players on the defense. We pretty much said DQ fix this defense with your defensive knowledge and scheme. But yet what talent have we added outside of the draft?

As we all know the majority of our money is put into this offense and it reflects. We have to have talent on defense.

I may be wrong but since DQ has been here our defensive signings have been Reed, Bailey, Davidson, Crawford, Shelby, Carter. May be missing some but all those guys are role players that work in situations. And none of them had the resume Avril and Bennett had going into Seattle.

SOOO WHAT ! The only thing that really counts is. Can he bring home a Super Bowl trophy? So far you have the answer.   :flush:

SOOOO, WHAT team has won the Lombardi that didn't have a good defense? The Patriots didn't win all those SBs without having a really good defense; neither did the Giants, Ravens, Broncos, Saints, Colts, Steelers, Seahawks, Eagles, and just about every team before them. You can't win it all without a good defense, and the Falcons are always mediocre to bad when it comes to defense. Plain and simple.

I don’t think there is any individual stat that tells the entire story, so I do think this stat is relevant to the story. Some people like to use scoring as the end all be all. Others use yards for rankings. If your defense can’t get off the field and you have less offensive drives, that helps explain lower scoring. If you have worse starting field position, it takes more yards to generate points, which also affects scoring output.

Consistently being top 5 in yards per drive also tells me our offense doesn’t have a lot of 3 and outs compared to the rest of the league, which tells me our defense should have been well rested more frequently, but they still had unsatisfactory results. In other words, there’s no excuse for the consistently poor defensive performance.

These numbers are straight awesome.

It’s hard to imagine what this would be like if we fielded a defense ranked even in the top half of the league!.  Or dare I say in the top quarter of the league.

Not to mention if we’d fielded a consistent Oline over this span.

MR has carried this franchise in so many ways.  And still we have small minded fools out to berate him. Smh.
