Man. I've tried so many different Whiskeys, Bourbons and Scotches but I have literally never enjoyed any of them. I just cant get over that initial taste and burn to appreciate the complexities. They all taste like I'm licking burnt firewood. Just a disgusting taste to me.

I just stick to beer.

Try it with ice and a splash of water. I wouldn’t do that to a good Scotch, but there are some whiskeys that are a bit harsh and some people prefer them diluted a bit.

Me and my cousins destroy that when we get together.  Need to get some new stuff.  I’ll pick something up this weekend.

If you haven't tried Buffalo Trace, then you should! Trouble is they (liquor store), only allowed 1 bottle per purchase. I came back the next day and all the **** was gone! Matter of fact they haven't carried that size bottle since then!

Been better but oh well, right?

Amazingly enough it seems to mostly be the same threads in here

But there is now a bourbon thread you can contribute to.

off topic, this hammer and sickle vodka is super dangerous.  Can barely tell liquor is in there...

I've always liked Woodford Reserve as a good intro into bourbon. Nothing too over the top about it. Just solid. I'd put Four Roses in that same category. I like my bourbon with a little more pepper on it but those are really good intro to bourbons in my mind.

Elijah Craig is another solid intro to bourbon but it definitely has a stronger flavor profile (at least in my opinion) than the other two. I'd go with Four Roses and Woodford first and then try Elijah Craig. Also you're gonna have a really hard time finding a 12 year old Bourbon at a cheaper price. Or the 23 year old one for that matter

Woodford Reserve is good, but Woodford Double Baked is my favorite.

One cube of ice and enjoy quietly.

Have you ever tried Woodford Reserve double oaked?

That's seriously the only bourbon where I actually tasted something that I'd have to describe as...... butterscotch?

I like liquors that are all about bang for your buck. It’s not about the top shelf because I often think that’s overpriced and overrated. IMO this is best stuff for its price and quality

Vodka: Tito’s or Costco brand

Bourbon/Whiskey: Buffalo Trace

Rum: Sailor Jerry’s

Tequila: Espolon Anejo, sip that neat with a little lime juice, the best

I’m sure it’s a personal preference thing but what am I looking for in a sippin whiskey compared to a mixing whiskey?

Mixing whiskeys (or any alcohols) should be just about feeling the effects of the alcohol and nothing more. A sipping whiskey should be about the taste of the whiskey. But you have to actually like whiskey is the thing.

Im a tequila fan. But I like tequila straight so I actually care about the brand and quality of the product. But if I’m drinking a margarita, I can’t tell what tequila is used because it’s completely blocked by all the sugar.

My wife, an ex-bar manager, made the most amazing mint juleps w/ the Even Williams Bonded and some fresh mint from our garden.

Then, I busted open that Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve.

REALLY pleased with that already & can't wait to see how it is once it opens up over time. It reminds me a good bit of Booker's, which I love. I guess that shouldn't be too surprising though considering this Knob Creek release is so close to barrel proof at 120 & they're both from the same mash bill. With the Knob Creek being about $40 less than what Booker's costs these days, I think the Knob Creek is an absolute steal.

I had it neat at first & that burn is massive at first... especially if you haven't had anything with thes high of a proof in a while... but just as quickly, that flavor bomb goes off in your mouth, bursting with caramel & vanilla. That turns to a bit of a cinnamon spiciness which accompanies the long finish. By the second sip, I started to get a little acclimated to the proof and could really taste the greatness even more. Then I put a tiny splash of water in the glass and that did some magic. It became incredibly smooth up front and the caramel was standing way out front with the vanilla lurking slightly behind. The oak was in there as well, and so was the cinnamon spice. If I held it in my mouth for a second or two longer, the spice moved into an almost black pepper taste with the leathery, oaky, tobacco-esqe notes coming through.

Very stoked to have this on the shelf.

Most whiskeys are pretty harsh and undrinkable to me. Except crown royal that stuff I can drink and I been training butt self sipping it to see if I can acquire the taste. Still pretty hard though. What’s your favorite tequila? The Smokey was of the gold tequila kills it for me.
