Falcons 2nd Half: Record Breaking Pace

Recommended Posts

I can’t be more proud of the incredible improvements and adjustments made by the Falcons defense the last 7 games.  Best 3rd down defense, most turnovers created and top 8 in ppg.  There is good reason to be confident moving forward.

Now let’s get to the record setters: offense.  Their second half didn’t fair so well.  Despite an increase in ppg, that is due to defensive scores & 18 turnovers created by the defense after the bye.  The offense was actually much better in the first half of the year.

Need Proof:

• QB Sacks Last 7 Games:  28.  Over 16 games equals out to 64 (3rd most in NFL history)

• Ryan Hits Last 7 Games:  79.  That’s over 11 per game and over 16 weeks adds up to 181.  A modern day record

Interesting, was their a difference when Lindstrom played in the final few games? I'm just wondering if we can look forward to more improvement with the Oline with him or are we going to need to bring in more help.

This has more to do with the OC IMO.  But the last 4 games were better.

QB Hits: 36

Sacks: 10

Pretty sure 3 of the final 4 games with Chris were very good on sacks/hits allowed...

But ya, when you pass 70% of the time you will allow more sacks and hits...especially when Dirk is asking people to ignore run defense and just take out your QB because you can’t run it even if you do...

What were the sacks/hits allowed vs Jags; when we used more of Kyle’s plays despite throwing?

Hits:  14 vs TB, 7 vs Jax, 8 vs SF, 8 vs Car

Look I don't like it anymore than anyone else, but DK ain't goin nowhere so we have to hope they gel that line and someone else calls plays in the red zone.

Also bring back the no huddle fools.

The idea of a 3rd down caller is actually quite clever.  Not sure who would thrive on 3rd downs....maybe a 1st down play caller would be better.

So, the only solution is a ground game resurgence that DQ as HC must get out of DK as OC

Gotta get closer to 55/45 than 70/30...a better defense will help. OL will be better as long as starting 5 can stay together. Mack healthy would mean a lot for another run. Lindstrom + Kaleb year 2.

But ya, OC improving will go a long way.

This.  Koetter runs a very high 3rd down conversion rate, but we had the second worst 2nd down and distance to go and the 4th worst 3rd down and distance to go.  Dallas had the 4th best on 2nd down and 2nd best on 3rd down.  So when Kellen Moore gets fired, bring him in for 1st and 2nd down play calling and let Koetter take care of 3rd & 4th downs.  GG.

Are you sure your 2nd half numbers are right?  I have the Falcons with 28 sacks on the year, not the last 7 games.

If you'd put even a little effort into reading the post, you'd see he was talking about sacks allowed by the offensive line. Not even close to as long as one of yours so I'm not sure what the excuse is lol

Bucs D is legit. We faced them twice in the final 7 games and then we had the Saints rematch; 9 sacks allowed...this was after the 8th game back...which was dropped in the OP ;)...

Where we actually protected Matt well and tried to establish the run early and often in the game plan...the Defense helping us keep the lead prevented them from pinning ears back, but they were able to ramp up their sacks as the game wore on in the rematch on the way to 9 allowed.

Lindstrom came back after that for the final 4 and it was better, but not there yet as a unit. I was impressed by Chris overall this year. Kaleb impressed me at times but looked bad as often. As a pro, consistency and technique...disciplined football and IQ for the 1on1s is essential in sticking as a starter.

Run game developing is critical for the unit moving forward and not making them as easy to be attacked by pass rushes...BUT the rookies got a taste of basically the worst case scenario having to throw 70% of the time and from behind often. A lot of film for personal study/self-scouting and technique refinement.

The run game must be fixed. Shanny would throw out of the run looks to open up the run and then run it from the same formation; sometimes vice versa. The under C use was exquisite.

Dirk? ...oh my lol

The only bad games by the OL the last half of the season were the two against the Bucs and the home game against the Saints. The rest of the games the OL looked much better, especially once Lindstrom came back.

Yep:

1 allowed vs that Carolina pass rush...34 attempts

2 allowed vs the 49ers; when everyone thought we’d be dominated...39 attempts

1 allowed vs Jags...45 attempts (the Shanny playbook game)

12 vs Bucs and 9 in game 2 vs NO...that’s 21 of the 48 sacks on Matt in just 3 games...nearly 44%.

That’s 27 sacks in 12 other games...or 2.25 per game. (*Played only a half vs Rams...injury)
