Blank Critical Of His HC: “Quinn Should Have Made Changes Sooner”

Ouch...not saying he is wrong, but Blank is laying down the thunder.  This doesn’t align with reports that Quinn had to sell Blank on the mid-season changes.

Quinn owes the cornerstone players on the team a thank you.  Julio, Grady, Ryan & Rico we’re very vocal in their support for Quinn and I think that swayed Blank.

“Blank said bluntly that poor coaching was a major cause of the team’s problems in the first half of the season. He also criticized Quinn for dragging his feet on making needed changes.

“He probably should have made some of these changes sooner,” Blank said. “I think the second half of the season is great and gives us a trail we can follow as we look into next year, but after you’re 1-7, it’s a little bit late. The music has kind of stopped playing.”

Quinn fired all three coordinators after last season and took over the defense himself, hoping his hands-on presence would lead to major improvement. The move backfired, but the Falcons have shown significant improvement on defense since Morris moved to that side of the staff. As part of the switch, Quinn largely ceded the defensive play-calling duties to Morris and linebackers coach Jeff Ulbrich.

The Falcons, who were 31st in points allowed after Week 8, have ranked in the top 10 in most statistical categories over the past seven games.

The decision to keep Quinn was praised in the locker room.

“We stuck together as a team and kept fighting,” safety Ricardo Allen said. “I’m grateful coach Quinn is coming back. That’s what I’ve been fighting for. Even when you don’t have very much to fight for in the season and you know you’re not going to the playoffs, you don’t want the head man gone.”

I hope he actually gets some use out of the preseason next year. May not take 2 months to hit our stride if we have 4 games of learning what works for us before the first regular season game.

Play the starters first 3 quarters of every preseason game.  Let the offense gain confidence on the 3rd stringers.  Go into Week 1 with momentum

I wouldn’t have a problem with this at all. If the mantra is that every player earns his spot, then let them play every game as if it’s real for most of the game.

Treating it like an extra practice has dulled these players’ edge in recent years. Injury risks be ****ed, I say.

Yep.

Momentum is such a huge part of football.  Let your starters feast on back ups to build confidence. Don’t be scared of injuries.  They will happen regardless.

I would be worried it would almost give them a false sense of accomplishment, aka the starters would be playing against 3rd-4th stringers and would likely dominate.  I think at most they should pull them when their second guys get pulled.

My thought would be a full quarter week one, a half week two, three week three and then sit week four other than maybe a drive.

That’s fair

The sad part is we had 5 pre season games this year and as soon as the season started it looked like we didnt even have a single practice together.

We had tons of injuries the last 2 seasons anyways. :(

My best friend comes into town for the opening weekend, and this year against MN we both thought they looked like a high school team against a college program.

I'm glad Quinn is still on board...I don't see the need for a dumpster fire because I think there were some lessons learned and 2020 will be a good year.  Yeah, tired of the "we'll gte 'em next year" but gotta keep hope alive.

We are literally running an insane franchise right now. Keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

We need changes in GM and the entire coaching staff to build and direct a team that can win it all. This GM and this coaching staff have already proven they are not capable of going all the way.

Thomas Dimitroff built 2 championship caliber teams in 2012 and 2016 but we blew it. We will have more experience if we make it back though

Yeah well if we play starters in preseason and someone gets injured and the fans get mad, Dan Quinn can point to slow starts and injuries happening to us anyways to defend himself.

You are going to have injuries regardless as we have seen the last 2 years. its better to have them in pre season when you have more time to fill rosters holes and get them up to speed.

They aren't championship caliber if they didn't win. Bad trench players contributed greatly to those lack of championships even when we got close.

Just my opinion, but I think this staff needs one more season to run and see what happens.

Quinn isn't a 1st year coach. We know what we have with him we know our team is undisciplined and inconsistent.

We are simply wasting another year of Ryan and JJ in their prime.
