Rise of Skywalker Spoilers Discussion Thread

This is great, no offense, coming from a casual Star Wars enthusiast. But it's also ********. People didn't dislike Jake Skywalker because "Mark didn't like it." They disliked Jake because he was not Luke. He was an imposter that exemplified Rian Johnson taking a beloved, heroic character's name and likeness and gutting him into a parody of himself.

I recognize that the casual Star Wars enthusiasts here are still grappling with the issue of thinking they liked a movie that ends up being controversial and widely panned, so there are some real existential questions they have to ask themselves. But I would appreciate that if, in finding their truths, these casual Star Wars enthusiasts don't misrepresent their knowledge of Star Wars story, lore and place in pop culture.

I'm glad they didn't beat around the bush about Palpatine, but literally no explanation as to how he was alive, being kept alive, found an ancient Sith world, amassed an army, and built a fleet of star destroyers with death star guns on every ship. Just, hey, here's Palpatine and his massive army.

I caught them feels when Han appeared. Surprisingly did not get emotional seeing Leia.

Ben coming back to the light/jedi happened so quickly.

They'll leave that to the multitude of new novels that'll come out that takes place between Ep. 8 and 9 that they'll want you to buy in order to find that out.

(That's me, the dude that'll buy all of those new novels in order to find out the aforementioned. )

All the props to Adam Driver. Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is one of the most fascinating characters to ever be in a Star War. I loved how he took on Han’s mannerisms towards the end of this movie. He along with the other new characters are the saving grace of this trilogy. A trilogy that never should have involved the original characters.

What was Palpatines's first name? If the family surname is Palpatine, he had to have had a first name. If they put it up for fan vote, I'm voting for Hank. Hank Palpatine is every bit as badas5 as Luke Skywalker and Mace Windu. My second choice would be Gus.

His first name is actually Sheev.

Liked that Leia was actually Jedi trained and looked to be a tad stronger than Luke in the Force.

I'm shocked as many of y'all dig this movie as it seems. :huh:I might have to watch it again to see if I like it more than the first time.

It was probably the best of the latest Trilogy. Mind you that’s a pretty low bar to hurdle. It was a B for me. The Kiss made me roll my eyes and groan. There was literally zero romantic tension or hint at a growing romantic relationship between the two up until that exact moment. Where the **** did THAT come from? Oh, and was anyone really surprised that the old chick that was with Holdo in TLJ was gay? She laid a nice one on some other random chick in the background during the Yavin, Er I mean Endor or whatever celebration at the end. Rian was all over the place with SW lore and subversions and JJ couldn’t come up with anything that wasn’t a callback in some way to the original trilogy. Overall, lackluster trilogy and I haven’t watched any of these three more than once. And look at my screen name. That should be telling.

I was encouraged by The Force Awakens. Much better than the prequels. Too much that I hate about TLJ to list in anything shorter than an essay but the gratuitous casino layover and camel stampede were clearly just added to lengthen the run time. I asked the waiter for my check immediately afterward.

RoS was just a jumbled mess. Easily the worst thing that Abrams has put his stamp on and it's not even close. There is literally nothing about it that I liked other than the visual of Palpitine's inexplicable fleet, which I thought looked cool but was a crap plot device. How can characters that we've taken three films to know be this wooden and poorly written?*

And then, there's the science... or lack thereof, that made me strain my eyes after two hours of rolling them. And the cynic in me didn't believe for a second that Chewy was gone or that C3PO was going to be derezzed. Cheap emotional tricks that an amateur film maker might employ. Abrams needs to spend a week or two with Steven Spielberg to learn how to evoke authentic feelings through proper set up and execution. I felt literally no emotions watching RoS, even when Leia died. I expected Han's death in TFA but it was still a pisser and a kick in the gut when it happened. This time? The whole movie was a pisser and a kick in the nuts.

Like I said, I'm watching it again and hope I like it more this time. But I have a feeling I'm going to see more things that I can't stomach.

One week, after basketball season ends, I'm going to watch all of the Disney Star Wars movies and the original trilogy to see if I can't light that spark.

*Reading this made me think about something. Everybody in New Hope was wooden and poorly written. Lucas is a crappy writer but it was part of the charm of the original film. But they were fleshed out and developed in Empire and Jedi. Did not like Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo or BB-8.
