Way too early Mock Draft based on Hiring McCarthy

56 posts in this topic

THIS I A GET TO KNOW YOUR PROSPECTS and COACHING SCENARIOS. In no way am I certain the players rankings are going to remain the same. There's a fun mock generator at https://thedraftnetwork.com/mock-drafts and their data base rankings are fairly accurate and updated throughout the draft period.

The board us so full of nonsense, so I figured we could all get an early look at prospects and potential FAA.

*******************************************

In this scenario, which I challenge all of you to create your own mock/roster, I'm going with Mike McCarthy as the HC and he calls his old buddy, Dom Capers up to join as DC. But McCarthy decides he’ll split play calling duties and call up one of Matt’s old mentors Jeff Jagodzinki.

I think a coaching staff like this is possible because of the following:

1) AB is old and doesn't have patience for yet another unproven coordinator. **** want experience

2) McCartney and Jags have a good situation on offense. Matt jnkws the WCO and we add a running game we could be set.

3) Were gonna have to purge a few vets, casualties include Mack, Freeman and no Neal. I think Trufant is a goner, too big a cap hit and there are multiple needs.

4) Capers runs a multiple front defense and is clever. He might make a quick turnaround. Here's some intro to Caper’s defensive scheme

http://www.packtothefuture.com/articles/introduction-dom-capers-3-4-defense-front-7/

https://www.baltimoresportsandlife.com/know-enemy-green-bay-packers/

One thing that I like about papers is he mixes zone and man coverages and has an attacking defense.

5) Karl Joseph and Ha Ha Clinton Dix, not marquee players but both are an improvement over what we have currently. Joseph was hurt and might not be expensive. I think that he's talented

6) We completely rebuild the rb rotation. I look for us to have a blend of power, shiftiness and versatility in rotation. McCarthy’s best years occurred when he had a power running game and he uses an athletic FB. I think Ollie and one of my UDFAs fit that standard

7) Getting excessive salaries off our books frees a lot of money, can we fix everything? I think Capers has a good track record of quickly turning teams around

*************************************

free agency:

1) Derek Wolfe: 6’5” 290 lbs of scheme agnostic fury. Can play in either 43 or 34

2) Clay Matthews: not the player he once was but can play inside or outside in Caper’s scheme and will be a kind year deal kind of guy, but he's still fiery and has some gas left in the tank

3) Are-sign Vic Beasley for a reasonable price. Vic hasn't lived up to his potential, but there is talent and a guy like capers could unleash it. Will we see this guy? I think if he's rotated properly Vic can be a coup. He's still young and Capers is far more aggressive than DQ was

4) Lindstrom is back in lineup but he's also our backup  OC. We worked him out there and he's smart, so we have depth.

5) We draft Mack’s replacement, but I'm projecting an extra fourth round as we trade him to the dolphins . Mack is a clear upgrade over Dan Kilgore and the Dolphins almost assuredly will draft a QB.

6) Mike Pennell 6’4” 330 3/4 NT specialist. Rotational player but is a solid NT for the rotation. He's just an attitude and beastly man

7) Ha Ha Clinton Dix. Were expecting a quick turnaround and a guy like ha ha is an upgrade and fit in Capers defense

Karl Joseph. Heat seeking missile that @Vandynand @Knight of God wanted. Can he stay healthy? Was having a good year but got hurt.

We retain Crawford and Bailey. Both JAGs buy useful in Capers scheme. We also retain Jon Cyprien on a one year deal

****************************************************

THE DRAFT

*******************************************************

5 Isaiah Simmons , LB Clemson 6’4” 230

--quite simply a fantastic football player. Look for him to play anything from SS, to LB and even OLb and the edge on occasion. Talent and playmaking is key with Simmons. You just put him in the field. End of story. Period. Drop the mic.

37Creed Humphrey , OC Oklahoma 6’5” 320

--i love this stout and active guy as our new OC. He’s powerful and gets up field in a hurry

63 Najee Harris, Alabama 6’2”235

--this is my dude. He can run, he can catch and he's punishing.

-long and fast outside cb. Can be q but grabby, but fluid and long. Allows for man coverage situations. Very snappy and attitude driven playmaker that brings a but of swag to backfield

 70 Alton Robinson , EDGE Syracuse 6’4” 260

--long athletic OLB. Can play in multiple packages, great standup SAM backer. Brings size had athleticism to the pass rush stable. He's best suited standing up IMO

101 Leki Fotu,  IDL Utah 6’5” 335

--can you say beast? 34 or 43 and provides pass rush. Good in one gap or 2 gap schemes. Line him up at 0 tech and let him eat. Just nasty dude and rotating him with MP gives us a strong NT rotation

https://thedraftnetwork.com/articles/leki-fotu-s-fulfilling-his-promise

133 Paddy Fisher, LB Northwestern 6’4” 248

--Just. Tough throwback backer. He can play inside and outside, but I think that his range is best suited for inside. Beefy and mean kid. I love it :)

204 Reggie Corbin , RB Illinois 5’10” 195

--explosive lateral movement. Picks up chunks of yards. Probably not an every down back, but I see shades of Sproles or even Freeman in him. Classic example of a potential diamond stuck in a bad team. Tough little runner as well

https://thedraftnetwork.com/articles/reggie-corbin-and-the-art-of-change-of-direction

******************

I'm only picking one UDFA AND THAT IS AJ Dillon. He's a FB/Rb hybrid. He just brings power to the rotation. A rb lineup of Harris, Ollie, Corbin, Barner and Dillon who'll be listed as FB should get us excited.

I need to watch the films but I like the beef you are picking. Big violent circus freaks on both lines is what we need, and I like the emphasis on larger RBs.

Yeah, I think the vids (even just highlight ones) I really it intent in the ”mock.” obviously, who we select as HC makes a huge difference. I doing see how we don't address three things in 2020, regardless of who’s coach:

1) OL, why stop with just McGary and Lindstrom. Finish the job and build a young, cost effect OL? Jake getting paid is fine, but finish the job.

2) DL. Gotta do better

3) Running game. Free is expensive and ineffective. I like Ollie (2 TD in 12 attempts ), Ito is continually injured. And Hill, despite @Draftnut57 love for him is a JAG. If we get McCarthy he likes q mix of power and shifty backs.

Thanks for comments!

Solid stuff MSalmon- if that's the road we go down you need to be driving.

Ty. I have to agree with you, I don't see AB wanting another unproven assistant. A guy like McCarthy makes a lot of sense, and capers can coach

You don't need five players and obviously you didn't look at either the mock or FA. See Derek Wolfe and Mike Pennell and I drafted a giant NT.

Read, my man

who's McNarty with the Jags?

Fixed. Pretty obvious that it was an autocorrect error. Thanks for proofreading.

MSalmon- I think Blank is basically bringing in McCarthy for two to three year run, not who I would want, but I get what he is doing. So long as he gets my boy Dodds in at GM/scouting,  I will feel good about future of franchise. I think this IS already set up and that is reason Blank is in no rush to fire Quinn because it is allowing MM time to assemble his staff AND gives Blank time to get his new GM. Blank probably has to wait until after the season is over to reach out to GMs currently working for other teams. People wanting us to clean house now dont understand the inner working of the NFL and tampering rules.

I could see that, it actually makes sense considering how old Blank is, he's not operating on a ten year vision strategy lol

Besides, MM and Capers would be for a 2-3 yr run. I love Dodd too. Matt Ryan fits the McCarthy WCO and McCarthy prefers a balanced approach. I think my mock is similar to a Dodds style where he added physical and tough players. I like that style

I'm not sure of the tampering rules tbh, but it would make sense of McCarthy is already assembling his staff. I think if McCarthy is the guy, I'd love to see Jeff J. As well. Give Matt someone he's comfortable with. Maybe even retain Knapp.

I liked Isaiah Simmons for a long time.  Most of my July/September watchlist and draft scenarios were centered around getting him.  But as I watched more and more I got a very bad comparison as far as an overall player...

I get shades of Vic Beasley from Simmons.  There’s something about his playing style that dissuades next from really liking him.  He makes a lot of shoestring tackles, is an athletic specimen but is a finesse guy.  Maybe that was me watching too much film on him and over-analyzing, but I started to get scared away from him.

other draft related things:

Draft wise I believe Jaylon Johnson will go early to mid 2nd round.

I like Reggie Corbin as a speed guy, but for some reason when I watch him he doesn’t look speedy.  It’s weird.  He’s got some big play ability though.

Paddy Fisher is a name people need to get familiar with.  He reminds me of Blake Martinez...a guy I wanted when he came out of Stanford.

Alton Robinson was a July/September watchlist guy for me as well.  He’s a bit of a one trick pony though.  I never saw anything special from his pass rush repertoire.  He tries to beat you with speed, but I wouldn’t call him a speed rusher by any means.

Great post.

Great post.

Great feedback. I'm torn on Simmons. The similarity to Vic IMO us kinda what you're saying, you have to use him right. And that may involve moving him in different positions. I could see him being a safety in a cover two easily.

Jaylon could go higher depending in his combine. I'm curious about his forty

Corbin reminds me of Free. I think he drops in later rounds, but he's do shifty and has bursts of speed. I suspect like Free **** be a slow straight line guy. I love him as a COP guy though.

Agree, paddy is a beast

Alton to me us a 34 LB. He's a straight up long guy.

Great points! Thanks!

The FA is weird, but the draft is cool. I'd love to see Simmons next to Deion.

Why us FA weird out of curiosity?

So everyone is okay with bringing back Beasley and having him and Takk standing, where they have been super ineffective.  Deion Jones is being demoted? Didn't McCarthy fire Dom Capers? What makes anyone think they would work together again?

Just A LOT of players when the Falcons don't have the cap room. Old guys like Matthews. Vic is no bueno. TWO safeties (I love Karl, but Ha-Ha is not good).
