Almost Feel Bad For RB’s:

If the last two weeks show us anything, it’s this: excellent defense allows you to play slightly above average offense and score 28 ppg.

And despite what the score may say, our offense has been average the last two weeks.  But it was completely irrelevant.  Short fields and numerous extra possessions allows you to score points

I hate our unbalanced offense. In many ways, as disappointing as defense has been.

Until we get a running game, this team won’t have a winning record, much less return to playoffs.

Good post.

As I alluded to earlier, it’s rarely an absolute. Barkley is surrounded by incompetence at QB and suspect coaching/general management in NY.

Still not sure what the article is talking about...lol

Saquon BarkleyNew York Giants

The deal: Four years, $31.2 million

The undeniably gifted Barkley is on a fully guaranteed deal after being taken with the second overall pick by the Giants in 2018. While he has shouldered a huge workload amid dismal quarterback play from Eli Manning and Daniel Jones, he hasn't been able to single-handedly propel the offense forward. Barkley has been the ultimate boom-or-bust back, ranking 41st out of 47 backs in success rate in 2018 and last out of 35 qualifying backs this season.

In 2018, Barkley had seven runs of 40-plus yards on 261 runs. While slowed by a high ankle sprain this season, he has only one in 101 carries. If you need to break 40-plus yard runs once every other week to create value, the track record of guys in the NFL who have been able to pull that off for an entire career is mostly just Barry Sanders, and that's in part because he was able to stay healthy.

The Giants and hog-molly enthusiast Dave Gettleman passed on Quenton Nelson to draft Barkley, and Nelson is arguably the best interior lineman in football. They passed on Lamar Jackson, and Jackson is the most valuable runner in the league. The Giants ranked 16th in rush offense DVOA last season and are 20th this season. Barkley is an incredible athlete and has little to work with, but that doesn't mean he was the right pick.

Very true, any kind of stats or analytics will always just help swing the odds in your favor when picking players, there are always going to be exceptions to the rules.

That’s a very odd metric.  Apparently Zeke, Cooke, Chubb, Michel &  Fournette are slightly below average while Barkley, Johnson & Coleman are straight up trash.  I’m dumber having read that

I think your words-read-per-second rate is actually up around the 83rd percentile, but your success rate is not matching up to that because of your lack of comprehension of the hybrid pseudo-stats employed to arrive at the perceived actual value of highly paid RB's post-contract signing as mentioned in the artical.

Exactly. For example, JJ Watt has never come close to sniffing a SB. Neither has Lavonte David (such a good LBer) in Tampa.

Best example was poor Joe Thomas all those years stuck in Cleveland.

It’s the real reason Deion Sanders flew the coup here, he could see the writing on the wall.

The top end guys (Saquon, Zeke, CMC) of the world will still get paid.  And they deserve it.  But if you don't have an elite back, yea...not worth it.

This.

Also, I know these guys are outliers - but Michael Turner and Frank Gore both went well beyond "2nd contract" level. I know Turner was a back-up at one point, IIRC.

I agree.  Though it's funny because Saquon was hurt this year and is still playing hurt while Zeke has been healthy.

Really, like everything else, it depends on the individual.  Blanket statements cannot be made.

Agreed. I mean look at the Rams. They paid out the @ss for Gurley and he’s couldn’t make it the full season, and is now apart of an RBBC.

Interesting thread discussion,  @FalconsIn2012

As noted, I don’t completely agree with it. But even for an old codger like myself, it did cause me to take pause and re- think my beliefs on this.

That doesn’t happen that often in here. Good job.

I agree...this has been a rare gem on the boards...well thought out, actually debatable discussion with good insight on both sides.  Enjoyable read so far..and I gotta admit that I'm probably swayed...seems that youth, not "past" production, is the be-all-end-all for evaluating the worth of at least about 85% of running backs...
