Maxx Crosby: The Case For Not Trading Away Draft Capital

200 posts in this topic

I know guys like @Knight of God, @Vandy, @MSalmon, @Ovie_Lover & @athell really liked Maxx Crosby leading up to the draft.  I had him mocked to us once Chuck Smith called him “different.”  And apparently all were right.  It really would have been nice to have a 3rd round pick last year to draft Maxx.  He was on our radar, too

Maxx Crosby Since Week 5:

Once he took over the starting spot in Week 5, Crosby has accumulated 6.5 sacks in the last 6 games.  He also has 20 combined TFL/QB hits and 3 FF’s.

Hopefully the trend of using a 2nd or 3rd round pick to move up in the 1st round stops.  So many quality players are taken in rounds 2, 3 & 4.

Kaleb will be a very good RT, but you don’t have to trade up to get a player you like. You just don’t.  Kaleb possibly could have fallen to us in the 2nd.

Look at Justin Skule on the 49ers.  Taken in the 6th round in 2019 draft and has been better than any rookie tackle since taking over for Joe Staley this year

I liked Maxx and Winovich too as 2nd-3rd round guys but the OL had to be done. It had 2 longterm holes on it and still has possibly 2 pending Carp/Brown for OG multiple years and future at C.

Patriots were certainly in the running for Kaleb as they put off OT until later right after we jumped them for Kaleb based on our intel.

Look at the WR they took instead and how they traded multiple times after the draft for OL help. He ain’t doing jack and they made that many moves after? It seems their plans backfired.

And, the thing is there is a number of ways a draft goes on draft day that doesn’t play out if everyone got a chance to play the redraft game.

It was basically fix OL and buy time for DL for next offseason. Besides, look what happens when coaches do their job with the current DL? Who is to say another DE isn’t gimped being forced to play LB in the 3-4 nonsense for 8 games?

There is just no way we were going to fix both LOS in a long-term and complete sense in 1 offseason.

That said, it’d be nice not to be concerned about front 7 next year. Alas, at least we aren’t concerned about the OL as much. Imagine it with just Ty and before we didn’t think anything much of Gono(still a project)...

1st: Dex

2nd: Elgton Jenkins

3rd Maxx

4th: Sheffield

5th: Miller

5th: Cominsk

I like this a bunch...lol

Edit: just saw Trent Brown is a wife beater.  **** him.  Must be something about guys with the last name Brown

Yeah, if only it worked that way.

So, Trent for $21M next year and no OL depth at all? Lose one starter and ...

I don’t see how his contract works even in hindsight.

There was no short term OL FA fix in a single player, IMO. That’s the purpose of 2 rookie contracts now projected to be starters. Carpenter is a bad contract though. I’ll give you that.

The draft redo would be done different by every team tho...

It could have.  We took a hard look at Dex, Jenkins & Maxx.  But the trade up threw a monkey wrench into things.

I simply hate moving up and using a top 100 pick to do so

I edited my post(bad habbit)...but again if we would redo it for optimal picks then don’t you think other teams would as well?

Did we plan on Kaleb having a health setback? Pats wanted him at 32. Did we plan on Chris missing almost the whole season on a freak injury?

Again tho...we could have even done more for a 1 year stop gap with Vic’s money alone. Seems like DQ overthinking the whole 3-4 set the D back and Morris now helping coverage get tighter with more 4 DL formations = Defense seems just fine suddenly. Meanwhile, OL...

Hindsight, I know.  But Dex and Maxx were in 2 of my mock drafts so I am invested..lol

But the point of the thread isn’t really about hindsight re-drafting, it’s about not wasting top 100 draft picks

In 6 of 9 years we have used a 2nd or 3rd to move up.  Only Julio was worthy

Everytime I hear his name pop up I die a little on the inside...would have been a great addition to our line BUT I will say...whenever you think this organization is going to zig they zag so there is a logical path that we keep our pick, Maxx is there, and we go a different direction.

I think teams were sniffing around Kaleb, so I can see why they felt the need to move up but yea overall, there is value in every round.  I am much more team move back if your guy isn't there, collect picks, then use all that capital to move around how you want but oh well...

Yes the Falcons would probably have a terrible record if they had Ty at RT all season.

Pretty sure 6 of 9 isn't close to accurate.

We've had our 1st thru 3rd 4 times since 2014 so yea, not close to accurate.

How good has he been outside of the Bengals game with 4 sacks though?

How often was he being disruptive up until this past Sunday?

I haven't been following him and just wanted to know if he hasn't been another Antwan Odom.

Yep, Anyone who bothered looking at Maxx Crosby during the predraft process could plainly see the guy had the tools to be a great value pick.

He reminded me a lot of TJ Watt.  Both relentless with good hands.  If I’m recalling properly, they had very similar size... height, weight, arm length...

Dude went in the 4th I believe.

And @FalconsIn2012, Maxx was a 4th rounder for Oakland (106 overall), which would mean Atlanta would have had to spend their third on him and as it was iirc it felt like a reach for Oakland at that spot so it probably woulda been considered a huge reach in the 3rd.

Either way, cool to see him balling.

Good post. I know we all liked Maxx...but I think the OL picks will pay off long term

Agreed.  And we kinda got him in the later rounds in Cominsky anyways, didn't we?

I agree.  Every draft, unless you need a franchise QB, the objective should be accumulate as many top 100 picks as possible
