Blue Jays Catcher Reese McGuire Arrested

By Jeff Todd | February 12, 2020 at 11:15am CDT

Blue Jays catcher Reese McGuire was arrested over the weekend near the team’s spring camp in Dunedin, according to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi (via Twitter). He has a criminal appearance scheduled for mid-March.

This is obviously not the way the Toronto organization anticipated launching an important Spring Training. McGuire has been expected to pair with Danny Jansen behind the dish in 2020.

It isn’t yet clear how this matter will progress from a criminal perspective and with regard to the team and league. McGuire was charged with “exposure of sexual organs;” it seems the illicit action occurred inside a vehicle parked in a retail parking lot. Further alleged facts aren’t yet known.

The team issued a statement indicating that it is aware of the arrest and working to gather more information, but otherwise declining comment. The league has not issued any statement (and it may not).

McGuire, 24, is a former first-round draft pick who had run into some struggles on his way to the majors. He does not have a history of high-end offensive performances in the upper minors but has been successful thus far in the big leagues, with a .297/.343/.539 batting line through 138 plate appearances over the past two seasons.

Mitch Haniger had his second surgery of the winter. His 2020 season is in doubt, he'll be out a large chunk of it at best.

Not good for him coming off a bad season.

Pitchers have to face a minimum of three batters now. That stinks.

If a pitcher faces 1 batter and gets out of an inning, are they allowed to be replaced between innings?

I like some of the idea, speeds up the game, but removes a lot of strategy and a way for mangers to mitigate a big inning by playing pitching matchups.  Maybe incorporating a time limit before play begins instead for switching pitchers.

Yes. If a pitcher finishes the inning facing less than 3 batters he can be removed from the game.

Jerry Dipoto said he does not expect him to miss the entire season.

It's got to be killing him that he didn't trade Haniger in '18.

Usually only happens when the game is close. I doubt it will speed the game up but now they will lose the strategy.

Both MLB and NFL have tried to speed up the games and it doesn't work. XFL really tried and it still took 3 hours per game.

"Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki was the latest to chime in on the scandal, telling The Washington Post's Tom Boswell that Houston used its illicit system in the 2019 World Series.

“We could hear it from their dugout. We heard their whistling. What are you going to do?" Suzuki told Boswell. “I kept thinking, ‘We have to go to the field and work early on our signs in the World Series just to stop their cheating.’ It’s so stupid and so wrong.""

As Alex Wood said, the irony here is someone is going to retaliate and be made an example of and suffer more punishment than any Astros player for cheating and damaging the integrity of the game and other players livelyhoods. Sad...

Manfred said he talked to the managers around the league and informed them throwing at any Astro will not be tolerated.

Manfred said MLB will limit in game video use by teams. They'll also be handing out more severe penalties for throwing at hitters. He said they didnt discipline any players because it would have became a tangled mess of grievances from the MLBPA.

Our rotation is not good. Don't be surprised if they are at or below .500 come July.

Manfred also referred to the World Series trophy as just a piece of metal.

Manfred's proven that he isn't fit for the role of Commissioner. He needs to go.

Not a fan.

Hey look, a different kind of Astros cheating.

Astros right-hander Francis Martes has been suspended for 162 games after testing positive for the banned performance enhancing drug baldenone. It was his second such test; he had previously served an 80-game suspension during the 2019 season.

Martes was once one of Houston's top pitching prospects, and he made his major league debut in 2017, but he's been sidetracked by injuries, poor performance, and suspension.
