Dan Quinn updated reporters on a list of players who will and won’t play Thursday night.

Wondering who might be suiting up for the Falcons on Thursday night against Washington? Fortunately, Dan Quinn was all too glad to provide a few answers today, with comments rounded up by ace Falcoholic beat reporter Jeanna Thomas.

Let’s get to it.

Who are the Falcons holding out?

There’s a long list.

The first name is Russell Gage, who appears to have avoided serious injury against the Jets but will be brought along slowly. Gage is expected to be one of the team’s gunners and has been one of the most impressive receivers on the roster this summer, showing improved footwork, body control, and route running that could earn him a longer look on offense. He’ll hopefully be ready for Week 1.

Damontae Kazee is the second and most vital name here. Kazee is the expected nickel cornerback and an essential defender given his physicality and ballhawking ability, and the team will likely let him nurse that rib injury so he’s good to go for the game against the Vikings. In the meantime, with Kendall Sheffield also sidelind and being brought back slowly, look for Chris Cooper and Jalen Myrick to get some real work at nickel.

Foye Oluokun is also out. I’m not super worried about that because Oluokun has a clear, defined role and is going to step into it immediately, but obviously the sooner he’s healthy the better. Duke Riley, Bruce Carter, Jermaine Grace and others are fighting for a couple of roster spots behind him.

Finally, right tackle’s going to be down to a handful of options, because Kaleb McGary is on his rehab path and Ty Sambrailo is being held out with a shoulder injury. It’s a major opportunity for Matt Gono, who has drawn praise from the coaching staff for his versatility (he’s played both LT and RT and mixed in at guard) and rookie Jaelin Robinson, who is pushing for a practice squad spot. I’ll be watching closely to see if Gono can turn in the kind of performance that might propel him to a larger role down the line.

Then there’s the usual collection of players like Julio Jones and Deion Jones who weren’t going to play anyways but are still rehabbing. We’ll see them Week 1.

Who are the Falcons getting back?

The headline names here are Ra’Shede Hageman and Taveze Calhoun.

Hageman is a candidate for a rotational job on the defensive line, either as the ninth guy (assuming Takk McKinley, Vic Beasley, Adrian Clayborn, Allen Bailey, John Cominsky, Tyeler Davison, Grady Jarrett, and Jack Crawford are locked in) or the tenth and final one if you also add Deadrin Senat. It’s a crowded line, but Hageman’s two game suspension might actually work in his favor, because it allows the Falcons to get two games under their belts and see if they think they need him or not. He’s had his moments this preseason, but again, it’s a very crowded group.

Calhoun is a long shot to make the actual roster but could be in the running for a practice squad spot. The 26-year-old has good length for the position but is facing the prospect of battling for a roster spot where at least five guys (Desmond Trufant, Isaiah Oliver, Damontae Kazee, Jordan Miller and Kendall Sheffield) are more or less locked in. Add in interesting young players like the recently-signed Jalen Myrick and Calhoun’s going to have to play at a very high level the next two weeks just to get a roster sniff at the end of the month.

Players like Sambustlo piss me off the most . Been a dud his whole career basically, gets 2nd wind with us, performs decent against a bunch of dud teams that are outta playoff contention(us included), gets an extension in American Money for it, comes back with a nice check book & bigger expectations(by some), looked like shlt and now “he’s hurt” all of a sudden . Charmed life . Wish he lived it in any city but Atlanta . Smh !! <_<<_<

Gosh I wish he wouldn't have requested all of this to happen to him. How selfish of him!!! Ugh I agree. Screw him for making the Falcons pay him.   /purple

The thing that upsets me about the Gage injury, is it was completely avoidable. Matt has to stop throwing those big play balls so safe. Gage had his guy beat cleanly, but Matt underthrew the ball, forcing Gage to wait and high point it. Led him to the pylon and it's a walk in TD and no injury.

This. Matt has an arm don't get me wrong. But he isn't the most consistent with it.

Yeah Gage put a nice inside move on that DB and had him beat clean - had about five yards of separation. Like you said it was a walk in TD. His route running has definitly improved since last season.

He got hit right after he let the ball go, he got hit every other play he was in there. Might have sped up his mental clock a tad.

Eh no excuse. He had plenty of space in the pocket and on the field. He just has a habit of doing it. It's so frustrating. I saw the move the moment it happened. If no place else, practice that throw in preseason. It was there.

that's my only real beef with Matt, WAY too many times a receiver has to break stride to catch his passes. Julio would have at least 20 more TDs if Matt lead him better on throws

Told my wife and son this exact thing when I saw the replay.  Gage would still be running if Matt got it out there.  That injury is on Matt.  Love him, but it is what it is...thankfully sounds like Gage is gonna be alright.

Watch it now...TAFT can have a difficult time with even a hint of criticizing Matt. :ninja:

Yet ppl complain why Julio doesn’t have more TD’s. Julio would have on average 10 td’s A season if the 3 or 4 underthrown walk in td deep balls were hit in stride. But for some reason he can hit some guys in stride. Julio hardly ever. I know Julio has a 6th gear but the complaints about his td’s Are basically from this. Norman almost broke Julio’s back on a ball he was beat badly but Julio had to wait on the ball which gave Norman a chance to catch up and backwards tackle Julio. He got the flag but it scared all of us fans the way it looked. If that ball is out front Norman never lays a glove on Julio and THATS his first TD of the year instead of the wr screen.

This is true. Lol. It’s one of my critiques of him as well. I actually had somebody tell me he hits Julio in stride a lot and actually used a video where it’s obvious Julio had to slow down to catch the ball as proof. But because Julio was still facing forward instead of turning around he was in stride. No he broke his stride to wait on the ball. The db made the tackle. Matter of fact it was Claiborne with the cowboys.

Whats weird is he will hit Ridley or Marvin Hall deep in stride, even Sanu on those deep crossers but always underthrow Julio.
