Falcons Depth Chart & Competition at TC

Here is a rough depth chart of anyone that I think has a chance fighting in training camp right now. It total 65 players not including the injured players listed. You have to cut 12 players off this list ultimately. What positions/competition are you looking most closely at over the next month?

Our lines are looking so much better. Hard to see a lot of weaknesses, maybe linebacker depth but you have the hybrid LB/SS that can cover in a pinch. I'm excited to watch the competition to round out our RB, WR, and CB positions.

QB Matt Ryan Matt Schaub Kurt Benkert
FB Ricky Ortiz
RB Devonta Freeman Ito Smith Qadree Ollison Brian Hill Kenjon Barner
WR Julio Jones Mohamed Sanu Calvin Ridley Russell Gage Justin Hardy Marcus Green Christian Blake Olamide Z

Here is my stab at it.  Some of the decisions are really hard because of the quality of depth at some positions.

Keep:

QB    Matt Ryan    Matt Schaub
FB    Luke Stocker (also TE)
RB    Devonta Freeman    Ito Smith    Qadree Ollison    Kenjon Barner
WR    Julio Jones    Mohamed Sanu    Calvin Ridley    Russell Gage    Justin Hardy
TE    Austin Hooper    Logan Paulsen    Eric Saubert
OT    Jake Matthews    Ty Sambrailo    Kaleb McGary    Matt Gono
OG    Chris Lindstrom    James Carpenter    Jamon Brown
OC    Alex Mack    Wes Schweitzer
DE    Takk McKinley    Vic Beasley Adrian Clayborn    Rashede Hageman    John Cominsky
DT    Grady Jarrett    Deadrin Senat    Tyeler Davison    Jack Crawford    Allen Bailey
LB    Deion Jones    Devondre Campbell    Foye Oluokun    Jermaine Grace Bruce Carter Kemal Ishmael
CB    Desmond Trufant    Isaiah Oliver    Damonte Kazee    Kendall Sheffield    Jordan Miller
FS    Ricardo Allen    Chris Cooper
SS    Keanu Neal    Sharron Neasman
K    Giorgio T
P    Matt Bosher
LS    Josh Harris

Cuts:

QB - Kurt Benkert - Unless Benkert totally blows us away in pre-season, I don't see the Falcons taking a chance on letting Schaub go. I would love to be wrong on this one because we could use the cap space.
FB - Ricky Ortiz - Stocker makes him expendable
RB - Brian Hill - I like Hill but I think Ollison beats him out.
WR - Marcus Green, Christian Blake, Olamide - WR is deep and there really doesn't seem to be a spot available unless someone really outplays Hardy OR out returns Barner.
OL - Sean Harlow, Adam Gettis  - Neither of these guys are going to beat out the draft picks or free agent signings along the line.
DL - Chris Odom - Odom has some skills but with the veteran players above him, he is likely headed for another year on the practice squad.
LB - Duke Riley, Tre Crawford - Riley has the athleticism, but just doesn't seem to have the instincts.  Crawford impressed during rookie camp but might need a year on the practice squad.
DB - Blidi-Wreh Wilson, Taveze Calhoun - Unless one of the rookie CBs really struggles, I can't see us letting one of them go to keep either of these guys.

That was kind of my point in making this - DQ and TD did a heck of a job shoring up our depth across the board. Looking at the roster, we have serious depth at pretty much every position. Our lines look so much better.  RB/WR competition is going to be tough because there we have some real gadget rookies that are going to push for spots. I could see Barner getting the axe with what we have brought in. Going to be fun watching our preseason games.

If I were a competitor of the Falcon's and in the division.  I would be terrified.  This is why.  We are loaded at the skill positions on Offense and have a nice young defensive core.  And now we have good lines on both sides of the ball with really good depth.  We still have a few chinks in the armor here and there, but as it looks right now, this is the most solid this team has ever looked in my opinion.

Agreed. I love what we potentially have set up nicely for our future too. If Gage can step up he makes losing a Sanu next season less of an issue. Sheffield and Miller can give us cap help by cutting Trufant. Young talent on the offensive line in Lindstrom and McGary that we can have for 5 years. And we are still largely talking about depth roles with the talent we have this season. I love it.

Look at our defensive line, we have the potential for a great rotation - Takk, Beasley, Jarrett, Senat, Crawford, Clayborn, Davison, Bailey, Cominsky, Hageman.

This is pretty darn close I'd say. Only bits I differ on:

Blidi Wreh-Wilson is unlikely to be cut. He has starting experience outside which we're short on. Given we're in sub packages 70+ percent of the time I think we're more likely to carry 6 CB's over 6 LB's.

Can't see them trying to stash Marcus Green on the PS. I suspect he wins out over Barner.

Chris Odom is an out and out edge guy which we're short on behind Takk and Beasley. Can't see us cutting him over someone like Hageman (particularly given the Bailey signing).

id keep green over barner most likely, I dont see us entering the season with less than 6 wrs. I also dont think we will keep four tackles, so gono most likely to practice squad. Id keep cb wilson, and even thoug im no duke riley fan he did play better down the stretch last yr and is fast on special teams

We kept Gono on active because they knew he wouldn’t last on PS as a UDFA, so doubt they will be able to keep him there this year...especially if he is looking good. I think he makes Sambrailo expendable next season.

Heres my 53 . Some tough cuts because i like tre crawford and Chris Odom and even Bruce Carter. But we may keep more linebackers if we run more 3-4.

Agreed on the 53. I don't think it's that hard honestly. Maybe Carter over Duke, but that's a maybe, given you tend to keep your guys longer. Duke is much younger.

This is the year Falcons may actually carry more CB and LB. Kazee is hybrid player, it gives more flexibility to carry an extra CB. I don’t see Duke Riley cut either unless he stinks up the preseason bad. The last LB spot won’t be decided on instincts but ST value. Grace has a big task to beat out Ish and carter.
