De'Vondre Campbell was the most efficient tackler for the Falcons last year

The Atlanta Falcons are blessed to have elite talents at several different positions. They’re also relatively deep, with an unusually high number of quality under-the-radar contributors. One of them is linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, who rarely gets any attention for his fine work on the field.

According to Pro Football Focus, Campbell was Atlanta’s most efficient tackler during the 2018 season. They say he only missed one tackle in every 29.7 attempts. Here are how the top five Falcons performed in this category.

Despite the sure tackling, Campbell only earned an “average” 57.5 grade from PFF for the season. The foot injury to starting middle linebacker Deion Jones (notably absent from the above list) had him playing out of position for a part of the year, though.

Campbell is also an above-average coverage linebacker and can finish in the backfield.

Part of the famously strong 2016 draft class for the Falcons, Campbell is now entering the final year of his rookie deal. Atlanta should try to keep him around for a long-term extension if general manager Thomas Dimitroff can make the numbers work and keep Campbell, Jones and Keanu Neal.

I have been a Campbell fan since I saw him in person at mini camp in 2016. I was blown away with his athleticism for his size and length. I really hope we can find a way to keep him.

As for the Foye thing, I think it was a different stat. I think it was he made a tackle on a certain percentage of snaps, whereas this is how many misses per attempts.

Sounds like more PFF nonsense. Campbell played poorly last year.

I mean, the SAM is supposed to be the best tackler.  He also outside the TE so has less area  to cover which makes his job a tad easier.

Dre was just average last year. Hopefully 2017 Dre surfaces with Debo back

Your MLB should be your best tackler. Also coverage area depends. If he’s in man his coverage area is wherever the TE goes. If he’s in zone they all have a certain area to cover. He may have to cover a TE AND a RB out the backfield on the same play. So he def doesn’t have an easier job.

I wouldn't say that. This guy is gonna have to contain against the run, run in pass coverage, and sometimes rush the passer.

That’s subjective brother. I think his play last year was the product of him trying to do HIS job AND cover for 2 other guys that were filling in for Debo. Sh*t looks different depending on who’s playing next to you. What would wes look like without Mack at center? I mean to me to say a guy played poorly on a defense that sighed as a whole? How much of the supposed bad play is that one man’s fault? Or is it a result of the guys he’s playing with? I can show where Ray lewis looked to have a down season when goose left. Then he got back right when nagta got there. Subjective. 11 pieces all playing together. One piece fails and eventually the entire thing fails if not fixed. By contrast Tru and Alf has their worst seasons as falcons. Who was missing? Neal and Rico. I don’t it’s on the individual as much as it is playing with other guys that don’t fully know their jobs.

In the 4-3 Under there is a 7 and 9 at the SAM. Clearly Dre is a 7.  A physical dude who plays close to the LOS, covers the TE and rushes the passer.  Typically your SAM is your surest tackler, especially a 7 since they are closer to the line

Dre just wasn’t great last year.  But he has it in him

What do you mean a 7 and 9? I've never seen that.
