Remembering Joe Delaney, 36 years later

Recommended Posts

This isn't Falcons related obviously but God bless this man

I can’t swim good,” Delaney said, rushing to the water, “‘but I’ve got to save those kids.'”

He save one, but two of them died in the water, with Delaney.

There are grown ups who can barely read. Why would heck would you expect every adult to learn how to swim?

I didn't say I EXPECT it.

I merely stated I can't believe it.

Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers there lol.

Most of this country isn't anywhere close to the beach, and going to a decent pool isn't readily accessable to millions more. It would be like me being aghast about how many adults haven't set up an IRA.

Honestly that's a bigger issue than not learning to swim.

You mean some people haven't set up IRAs?

I have four separate ones and two 401ks.

My two older brothers threw me in the deep end of Mozley Park which was a big green lake when I was eight and said get out the best way you can. Been a swimmer ever since. Saved a lady ten years later.

My dad threw me in the pool when I was seven.  I was swimming within half a minute.

That's a sad story.  I can't believe there are grown people who don't know how to swim.

edit:  Well, he said 'I can't swim GOOD'.  So maybe he knew how but just....anyway it's a real sad story.

but just because someone can swim, doesn't mean they can swim while saving someone else. Not that easy to do, esp when you account for the panic that's entirely possible with someone who can't swim when they realize they could be about to die

For someone that is a good swimmer it's not easy to drag another person to safety, even if we're only talking about kids. I can't believe anyone would criticize a man for giving his life trying to save others. It's downright ridiculous to even be having this kind of discussion. Water is the most power force on earth and claims more lives each year than any other natural force on earth. It only takes 10 inches of water to sweep a 3000 pound car away. If it can do that to a car just think about what it does to people. Joe Delaney is a hero for doing something that the majority of folks wouldn't even have the guts to attempt to do.

:tiphat:

yeah that's kind of what I was getting at too. even an excellent swimmer might not be able to handle dragging another person along with them. Isn't that why lifeguards always have some type flotation device with them?

definitely a hero  "greater love hath no man than he who lays down his life for another"  or something like that  ;)

What a great human. I have to ask though, to whom did he say "I cant swim good, but I got.to.save those kids". I only ask because was someone with him and if so what did they do?

EVERYONE should lewrn how to swim well enough. I understand many peop le dont have access to.swimming pools though.

I was a small tike when this happened but I remember it like it was yesterday because it was the first time I’d ever heard of a football player passing away and was still playing and how my dad reacted to it. I’ve never forgotten this.
