Post Your 2019 Atlanta Hawks Big Board

Tomorrow night's draft will be exciting for Hawks fans. We can add some nice pieces to a solid young nucleus. Currently sitting on five picks. 8, 10, 17, 35 and 41. We'll likely draft two to four players and make some trades. I expect some head scratching picks we make for other teams. Pop your popcorn.

In my opinion our needs are small forward, center, back up point guard and shooting guard. In that order. I think our weaknesses are defense, rebounding, turnovers and shooting. The last five championship teams were top 5 in offense and defense. We were 12th in offense and 30th in defense in 2018.

Here's my first round Hawks Big Board. It's based on only stats and tape. I don't have any character intel. I'm higher on Nickeil, Bol, KZ and Porter than most. Post yours. Not how you see the draft going, but the order of available players you'd take when we're on the clock. Whether we trade up or down:

  1. Zion Williamson
  2. Ja Morant
  3. R.J. Barrett
  4. De'Andre Hunter
  5. Jarrett Culver
  6. Cam Reddish
  7. Coby White
  8. Sekou Doumbouya
  9. Darius Garland
  10. Jaxson Hayes
  11. Nickeil Alexander-Walker
  12. Goga Bitadze
  13. Bol Bol
  14. Rui Hachimura
  15. Kevin Porter Jr.
  16. KZ Okpala
  17. Tyler Herro
  18. Chuma Okeke
  19. Bruno Fernando
  20. Brandon Clarke
  21. Nassir Little
  22. PJ Washington
  23. Keldon Johnson
  24. Grant Williams
  25. Romeo Langford
  26. Talen Horton-Tucker
  27. Cameron Johnson
  28. Dylan Windler
  29. Nicolas Claxton
  30. Carsen Edwards

I am loving the latest ESPN mock.  Hunter, Hayes and Walker would be an athletic haul that would really, really help us defensively.

My dream scenario: Find a way to get Culver & Hunter in the 1st 8 picks.  Culver, Hunter & Hayes are all versatile, athletic and B+ defensive players that compensate for Trae on that side of the floor

But after watching more Hayes highlights, I’m good with the ESPN mock.  Running option pick & roll with Trae using either Hayes or Collins would be sick.  If Trae opts to use Collins pick, Hayes looks to clean up any missed shot with a rim rocking dunk.  We would be the most athletic starting 5

Okpala over both Chuma and Clarke is certainly a take.

I like buddy. Most have him late in the first, but depending on who's on the board, I'd take him as high as our 17th if we keep it. Pretty raw but has a lot of upside in my opinion. Could definitely play on my team. 6'10 wing that can penetrate and shoot.

Collins is not a B+ defender.  Not sure where you got that from.  He’s one of the worst defensive rated Forwards in the NBA.  Really hoping he can evolve into at least an average defender.  He should be able to once we settle into this rebuild.

Sorry, that was meant to be Hayes who will be very solid at Center.  We should draft a defensive minded PF to backup Collins

I don't like anything about Claxton's game.  Jaxson Hayes showed out against him and georgia:

Hayes is the class of the center position and my current crush for the Hawks at the 10 spot.

Starting to hope we stay put and build a defensive minded draft by taking Hunter and Hayes...then MT in the 2nd

Ah okay.

Spellman is supposed to be that backup PF.

My issue with Hayes is we have no clue if he can shoot.  We can’t have two guys who’s only ability is to flood the paint off the pick and roll. Whatever Center we run has to be able to step out off the pick and drop perimeter buckets. Otherwise there won’t be any open lanes in the paint.  And Collins and Trae already have an awesome chemistry with Collins going inside. I don’t want to mess that up.

This is why I think Goga is probably the better fit.  And he is a good rim protector and screener.

Hayes is young and really raw, though. Tons of potential.  I bet he could develop an outside shot too, so I wouldn’t be bent if we selected him.

We know he really can’t shoot.  But IMO we don’t need him to.  Protect the rim, run pick/roll  & and clean up weak side offensive boards.  Add 20 lbs and develop a 12-15 foot shot.  Scoring isn’t going to be a problem for us

You have the same problems i do with Hayes as fit wise he is the one center in the top 15 to 20 players who really doesn't mesh with what we do.  Coach LP has said numerous of times that he wants his Center to stretch to the 3 point line and be able to hit that at a descent clip to open things up.   You seen Dedmon and Len do this a ton last year and it made our offense dangerous and run extremely well.   Also like you i see Goga as a guy that can do that but Bol Bol is a monster at it to and has the most upside of any center in this draft probably.   Clarke can as well but not to the extent of a Goga or Bol Bol i don't think.  Hayes reminds me of a Clint Capela type of center which is a very good player but not sure if it's the best fit for our team and schemes.  Im not gonna complain if we take the dude as i do like him but will for sure leave me scratching my head as to why based on exactly what they said out of their own mouths about the center position lol.

My guy i like what you have chosen there i would be a big fan of Reddish and Bol Bol as the Hawks 2 picks at 8 and 10.    Although another move i would like to do instead is look at Center in Free Agency or bring back Dedmon for a few years while using 10 and 17 to move up for say 6 or 7 then taking Hunter or Culver there then taking Reddish at 8.    A Hunter/Culver + Reddish draft would be pretty awesome imo.

Move up in 2nd round to grab either Bruno or Claxton if they make it past SA or GSW.  Also love MT in 2nd round

Is Coby White the monster in this draft people are overlooking?  I just watched his last 8 games and am stunned he isn’t the consensus #2 pick.  He and Trae are not ideal defensively, but good lord the speed, range & ability to shoot off the dribble would be akin to the Splash Brothers
