How would DeRozan fit on the hawks?

He is on the block with 2yrs left on his deal with his last year being a player option. Deadly mid range game, and ability to get to the line. He's also developed into a good passer allowing him to be our secondary facilitator. He could allow some of the young guys we get at the the wing to develop on the 2nd or 3rd unit with no pressure. When those two years are up...our young guys are ready to step up.

This TP trade has solidified the fact we’re not going to be active in FA this year.

We have just enough to offer Dedmon a deal, and/or make another trade to take on an expiring contract for more pick assets, and that’s about it.

We still need around $11-$14M to sign rookies, and then fill a couple depth holes, such as trying to re-sign Vince Carter.

We potentially have 4-5 picks next year too. Potentially 3 firsts.  We may not make our max deal FA offers until 2021 even.  Looking for an impact FA right now just isn’t in the plans.

We are in “Acquire assets and develop rookies” mode.

Dedmon has UFA caphold of $9 mil.

Justin Anderson has RFA caphold of $7 mil ( we aren't paying him $7 mil).

After the TP trade. We still have $26 million of capspace which includes the salary for 3 1st round picks ($12 mil).

So if Dedmon resigns at  $10-$12. That leaves $14 million to take on another salary dump and fill in the rest of the roster with vet mins. and exceptions.

We also have the expirings of Baze and Crabbe (useful but overpaid players), then there's the useless expiring Plumlee.

Yep.

Next year is a different story.  We’ll have upwards of $80M to possibly spend.

I like the idea @WOR mentioned of trading up in draft with Cleveland (#5) for the mere cost of absorbing the JR Smith salary dump.  Maybe we throw a 2nd rounder or two in the deal.

That’s a fairly painless deal taking on one more expiring contract.   WOR said Cavs are in luxury tax so it would be worth it to them to move down from #5 to #8.  While both Hawks and Cavs presumably like Jarrett Culver.

This move gets the Hawks the #2 player on their entire draft board and they still have all their assets.

I mentioned in another thread that the Hawks should sign either him or Harrell from the Clippers.  I lean toward Harrell because of youth, but getting DeRozan would provide veteran leadership...

And folks are not reading.  DeRozan is a free agent in 2020, not THIS off season...

Hawks aren’t taking a premier FA this year like others have said.

Spending money on these 2nd tier stars - it’s just not gonna happen - not should it.

Good is the Enemy of Great - especially in the NBA.

Why would they need Derozan in 2020? Schlenk is building through the draft and bringing in mid-level guys to provide leadership.

Its a option...  Its a REALISTIC option as a plan b or c.   What if Travis doesn't get what he wants in the draft?   This is just discussion on what people think the Hawks would, should or will do. Nobody knows until it happens...

Understood, however Mr. Schlenk has proven he has a plan and I’m confident that we get a 2 & 3 in this draft.  I just think it’s pointless to discuss upper tier FAs when we know the Hawks are not in the market!

Not in the market THIS year.  I also agree that I don't believe that getting a top free agent is a part of the plan in 2020 either but things can change if they don't get who they want in the draft.  Next year's draft is deep in guards but the problem there is you can't count on your won lost record to determine lottery position anymore under this new system, sooo, I'm pretty sure they are gonna try and grab Culver THIS season which would make getting Derozan a non issue...

I got you!  Culver is my favorite prospect not named Zion or Ja and the Hawks could definitely be making a play for grabbing him!

The Hawks could have won a championship a few years ago with a bunch of good players if not for some cheap shot-related injuries, but I agree that paying good players like superstars is death by a thousand cuts in the NBA.

Oh I was very wrong here lol.

Jayu pointed out that the Cavs can just wave JR and save 12 mill
