FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots have released veteran tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

Seferian-Jenkins had signed a modest one-year, $895,000 contract on April 10, and he was vying for a roster spot at a position where the Patriots are transitioning without the retired Rob Gronkowski. The contract included just $50,000 in guaranteed money.

Seferian-Jenkins wasn't at the team's mandatory minicamp Tuesday, with coach Bill Belichickforeshadowing his release by saying that all players who were required to be present had reported.

The 26-year-old Seferian-Jenkins, who has 116 career receptions for 1,160 yards and 11 touchdowns in 43 games over five seasons, also wasn't present during a voluntary practice in May that had been open to reporters.

Veteran Benjamin Watson headlines the Patriots' depth chart at tight end, but he will miss the first four games of the season because of an NFL suspension for banned substances.

Matt LaCosse, Ryan Izzo, Stephen Anderson and Andrew Beck round out the depth chart.

Seferian-Jenkins had 11 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown before going on injured reserve in early October with a core muscle injury that required surgery. He became a free agent when the Jacksonville Jaguars declined his $500,000 option for 2019.

He joined the Jaguars on a two-year, $10 million deal before last season after resurrecting his career with the New York Jets. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut him after a September 2016 drunken driving arrest, which ultimately resulted in a two-game suspension by the NFL at the start of the 2017 season.

I wish the Falcons were hard like this. I don't care if it's Julio, grady, Vic, trufant, hooper etc etc.

You don't come, you're clearly not there for the team improving. Yes, Julio and etc don't need it for themselves, but they greatly help the team.

ASJ is wasting his career. He’s very talented physically but just can’t shake those demons. Hopefully he does for his sake and turns his life around. His chances are going to be limited....sooner or later that’s the last chance.

Yep.  What did he expect from Belichick who prevented Butler from participating in OTA’s for 3 weeks due to missing one day

“Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler was held out of the first three weeks of New England Patriots OTAs as punishment for being late to the first day of voluntary practice last month.

The Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe reported Wednesday that Butler was late to the first practice on May 26 because of a flight issue. Butler planned to fly to Boston the day before OTAs but the flight was pushed back because of the weather. He arrived in Boston the next day but was late to the first practice.

Ben Volin of The Boston Globe says Butler finally was able to practice on Wednesday.

This is some harsh punishment for Butler. Perhaps Bill Belichick is trying to teach the hero not to get a big head and humble him. It’s quite the harsh lesson from the coach.”

Who have we had that didn’t show up to mandatory camp? I’m sure Quinn would cut a fringe player like ASJ if they didn’t show up to mandatory camp as well.

Nah it ain’t that. It’s the fact that dude barely has an nfl career and he’s not in a contract dispute. He HAD to be cut. He’s a nobody. Now the players that don’t show up are usually in a dispute but are stars and the team has been notified that the player won’t be attending so they will lay down fines per day missed. THAT is the difference. If Julio missed who in their right mind would cut him? You can bet your bottom dollar he’d get fined tho.

"On the day that New England has opened mandatory minicamp, the reining Super Bowl champions have informed the veteran tight end that they are releasing him. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network adds that Seferian-Jenkins is "taking a step away for a month for personal issues and the team will release him as he does that. We’ll see if he comes back to New England or anywhere."

Came to post this.  It's almost impressive how out of touch with the real world mash actually is.  Sad really.

Exactly. Dude barely has an nfl Career and he missed the 1st day of mandatory? No bueno. Why wouldn’t Quinn cut the same  type player that missed 1st day of mandatory? Or any HC?

Julio missing voluntary OTA's and some dude with a DUI missing mandatory OTA's ...

Yeah , I see his point lol ...

He was stepping away for a month or so for personal reasons. He was well aware he was getting released. It has nothing to do with being hard. They let Josh Gordon leave in the middle of the season for his personal stuff and didn't cut him.

Even the pats wouldn’t have cut any of the players you mentioned. It was a guy who isn’t that great, and was on a cheap 1 year deal with no cap ramifications.

as others had mentioned, it was beyond just missing a day. He is stepping away from the game, had some issues to deal with.

Yep, I am piling on here Brooking style, but it’s warranted.
