Part of what impressed ATL about Lindstrom was how he responded to getting very little sleep

NFL Draft Recap

Draft Decisions: NFC South

by Josh Norris

Updated on May 27, 2019, 8:26 pm ET

I love producing this series every year. It takes time, but digging into the reasons behind each and every selection, straight from the decision makers, is very valuable. Sure, head coaches and general managers might not reveal every piece of information, but immediately following the draft is as open and honest as they will be. These notes come directly from post-draft press conferences and any extra videos team sites pump out. Some quotes are verbatim, others are paraphrased.

Atlanta Falcons

Speaking: Thomas Dimitroff and Dan Quinn for both days

1.14 (14). iOL Chris Lindstrom, Boston College - Steadfast in our approach. We wanted to be very direct in our offseason plan. Spent a lot of time on the “bigs” on both sides of the line… Two of the most physical linemen in the draft. Lindstrom will play guard…  Aggressive and urgent football player. Good athlete as well as being tough and gritty. Smart football player, three and a half year starter, and fits the scheme we want to run. A lot of experience and has the pedigree… We were looking for a tough, gritty, nasty guy who could get out and around… Out him through center drills as well, do that with most of the guards… Team was not interested in moving up from 14, despite receiving calls from 6 to 12. Discussed trading back, the feeling was the focus on acquiring Lindstrom. Three or four teams inside of 20 were interested in him. Received “Good job you, *****” after drafting him. If your quarterback can’t climb inside the pocket, that is an issue. Guards allow that to happen… There was an interest level in Christian Wilkins. Awesome guy, he’ll do great in Miami. Did not eliminate Sweat from the board due to medical… Workout story: Lindstrom was coming from another trip, flight didn’t get in until 1am. He was the first one in the building, ready to work at 8am. “I don’t care if I got back at 6am, I’m being there.” He came and got after it. Tried to put mental stress on him and he was resilient.

Traded to Rams
2019 second round pick (45)
2019 third round pick (79)

Received
2019 first round pick (31)
2019 sixth round pick (203)

1.31 (31). T Kaleb McGary, Washington - McGary will play tackle. We were very focused on him. Initially thought we could get him in the middle of the second, but more people we spoke to we felt we had to be aggressive. Didn't want to sit at No. 45 and miss out on the run of offensive linemen… We knew we had to keep protecting Matt Ryan. This draft was good in the trenches… Goal was to move up from 45. It was a focus… Big believer in the systems these blockers come from. We have a great relationship with Washington… We know the style and attitude of these players fit what we want

Traded to Lions
2019 fourth round pick (117)
2019 sixth round pick (186)

Received
2019 fourth round pick (111)

4.9 (111). CB Kendall Sheffield, Ohio State - This guy can fly. Look for him to grow here. He can play on the outside. Talked about return specialist, but that’s not a priority with us now… Injury helped him get to this pick. Ball skills on the outside is important… Could play nickel

Traded to Raiders
2019 fourth round pick (137)
2019 seventh round pick (230)

Received
2019 fourth round pick (135)

4.33 (135). DL John Cominsky, Charleston - 285 now, believe he can get up to 290-plus. Hard-charging, gritty and really driven. End to defensive tackle. Really good athlete. Can’t wait to develop him… He is not the same as Takk or Vic Beasley at all. When you slide him inside, that’s where some of the cool stuff happens. He’s long and can attack the edges of blockers.

5.14 (152). RB Qadree Ollison, Pittsburgh - Really aggressive runner. Cool to add different styles of players at the same position… We’ve been thinking of adding a big back to this group. Has pass pro and can catch the ball. We had some good intel from Pitt. Expect him to have an impact on all four downs (special teams).

5.34 (172). CB Jordan Miller, Washington

6.30 (203). WR/RB Marcus Green, ULM - Will start him off at running back. Speedy, quick twitch. Not slight, he has bulk.

Where's our "this draft sucked because McGary was going in the third" poster 'bout now, huh?

Except for Ice and Julio and a couple of others, DQ and TD have pretty much re-made this entire roster since Quinn arrived. Without question it's now among the best, if not the best roster the Falcons have ever put together.

They've only managed one SB appearance so far, but you have to feel good about the team's chances to get back to the big show with these two continuing to build this roster with the draft and FA pick-ups.

It has put us in the position of having so many good players it's going to be extremely difficult to keep everybody and be under the cap, but that's a far, far better problem to have than to lack the talent to be a true contender every season. Never been a better time to be a Falcon fan.

Yep. This is officially his roster. And it definitely does not lack for talent. That's why it confuses me when people question the DQ/TD partnership. This is a duo that's already seen one SB like you pointed out. No reason they can't replicate it or get close. So long as #2 is around, this team will be knocking on the door. Let's just hope we can bust that sucka down one good time.

Would've had more if our OC position wasn't a turnstyle <_<

the thing I like about our Offense combo is I dont see kotter or MM trying to run out the door quick like kyle did

Agreed. Mostly because DK and MM had their shots at the HC positions and I don't think they'd want that responsibility anymore. That's my opinion anyway

Was watching some of the 2012 games and as good as we where, I think we're much better now. Especially in the run game, though I admit we'll have to actually see about that part. I also think DK has the relief that he doesn't have to 'guide' Matt anymore like he (maybe) did in 2012 and he can trust Matt's decision making and confidence in his arm.

I can only imagine what he had to go through trying to teach Winston

I watched most of the 2012 games numerous times, that was really the only yr kotter had a decent o line, but turner was old fat and didnt care anymore, there was a quote from him that yr that said this isnt my team anymore ask the OC. I liked quizz but he had no long speed whatsoever and the defense was all smoke and mirrors, bc of lack of talent. Folks complaining about or d line this yr dont know how good they got it lol. We had abe and an aging babs and thats really it, I like kroy but folks expected too much from him. Our safety play on the back end was awesome, that yr willy mo and decoud were one of the best tandems in the league, and we had asante the pick off specialist at cb and that was it bc grimes once again was injured, while dunta was not the best cb, he did hit like a SS which is rare for a corner just ask trufant. At Lb we had spoon who was good than a bunch of oks.

Yep

I was especially disappointed with what happen to Turner. I remember even the media picked up on the fact that he picked up weight and Smitty just swept the comments under the rug. Some of the reasons we lost the NFC championship game to the 49ers was because Abe was out, our run game dang near disappeared, and Smitty couldn't adjust after half-time. I believe Kotter is in a much better situation now than that year.

MM as our OC drove me crazy. Dude said we didn't have the players to run bubble screens and Kotter comes in and immediately proves that false. Also during that playoff game with the Giants it seemed like we didn't have a plan except "run, run, pass" --- in that order, all game long. That was his last game with us before he left and became the HC in Jacksonville. Sounds really similar to what happened with Shanny, but I don't want to start conspiracy theories. Him losing the playbooks still doesn't jive with me though.

Either way, I think we're in better shape now than even in 2012 if we can remain healthy.

once again see things the same way, love MM as a run guru, 2008 to 2010 turner was the burner and we were gashing folks but never loved his game plan, when he came here he forgot all his gadget plays

Outside of 2017, our offense hasn’t been the reason we haven’t won a title

Oh I know the D shares some of the blame as well as the coaching, but it doesn't help that Matt's had to go through 4 different OC's with different philosophies every couple of years. He can make said scheme's look like pure genius after a time, but I put that more on Matt. Dude is that good.

If Shanny came backin 2017,I believe we would have made it back to the Super Bowl

So we are torturing as part of Pre draft due diligence.  Sweet.  One step away from water boarding.  RISE UP

Edit: just noticed the lack of sleep was due to flight delay.  I thought we had a coach in his room yelling every time he fell asleep...lol

If we DON'T have a coach yelling at guys who fall asleep on duty, we have a bigger problem.

If we perform, Koetter is a one or two year rental.
