My thoughts on Day 1

10 posts in this topic

So I think it's pretty clear that I disagreed with the logic of choosing 2 OL with our first 3 picks after signing 3 long term and one short term OL in free agency.

I openly express concerns because it allows others who think differently to respond and we can have a cordial debate. Through those conversations here's what I think.

1. These OL will more than likely not be year 1 starters.

2. This was strategic in order to allow them proper developmental time.

3. This will save us a lot of money with our OL.

4. That money will be used to sign Deion and Grady. Possibly DeVo and some additional mid to high free agents.

5. Which means this was a 2 year Day 1 draft plan, not this year.

6. With that being said, now all the 1 yr DL and secondary free agent deals make sense. Because we needed to still compete this year the free agents were our 1 year resolutions for the DL until we are able to get to next offseason where we can have more long term options.

7. Even with the above, I still think that we wanted DeAndre Baker with the trade up and Kaleb was the backup plan. Giants and Gettleman made a good move.

8. Lastly, DQ is REALLY banking on his defensive coaching capabilities.

We'll see if it pans out. Thank you for coming tk my Ted Talk. Go Falcons!

I just wanted to state that I appreciate this, greatly.  I think that it's important to go into all conversations with an open mind.  There seems to be a significant lack of that in this day and age.

Agreed on the logic.

Similar points made here.

Also think DQ is banking on being able to take some FA's and improve them (like creating some rush with long armed Davison).

2 Olinemen with fifth year options = keeping your core Oline together longer without having to sign/negotiate after the fourth year...

Paying 2 5th year options at the same time will cost about 26 million,  fully guaranteed.  That’s a bunch

It's a bunch for sure, but not as much as paying what Olinemen are going to be making in FA in five years...already a stack of non-qb players are breaking the 20M per year threshold...

I agree. Not my favourite choices, but hey when Wilkins was off the board, it had to be someone on the OL. And what's the matter? Last season i was screaming on an improved OL, and here you go. 2 drafted offensive linemen that both have the size and the speed to play in our system. People was criticizing the FO for not addressing the problem at our Oline with the Fusco signing and that didn't work out at all obviously. Now they are trying to fix the problem with talent that can be factor in Falcons for many years and even Lindstrom could be a replacement for Alex Mack.

We needed a new identity to the offensive line. It was about **** time

I hope you’re right because right now we have 2 rookies that have never played a down in the NFL guarding our Franchise QB on the right side. And there’s no way you don’t start these two day one. If you don’t then why did we give up so much for them?
