Latest SB Nation's Mock

Another Clemson defensive lineman to add to the collection.

By Adnan Ikic@SayWhichWay Apr 15, 2019, 3:00pm EDT

We’re in the middle of mock draft season and SB Nation just dropped its latest one, 10 days out from the real thing.

I could go through and analyze the entire first-round mock draft but let’s be honest with ourselves; the main thing we all care about is what’s happening with the Falcons and that No. 14 pick. Clemson defensive tackle Christian Wilkins is selected by Atlanta in this particular mock:

14. Atlanta Falcons: Christian Wilkins, DT, Clemson

Offseason needs: Defensive tackle, cornerback, tight end, pass rusher

One of the high-end right tackles in this draft, like Jawaan Taylor of Florida or Cody Ford of Oklahoma, may be in play here. It’s just hard to argue passing on Wilkins. We’ve talked all offseason about the Falcons needing a defensive tackle. In the deepest tackle class in years, Wilkins is too good to pass up.

Montez Sweat is gone to the Giants at No. 6, Brian Burns is selected by Detroit at No. 8, and Ed Oliver is a Buffalo Bill at No. 9 (the three players at the top of my personal wish list in this draft). That leaves Atlanta to choose between Wilkins, fellow Clemson defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell, and every offensive lineman other than Jonah Williams (who went to Jacksonville at No. 7).

Wilkins is a very solid pick who can slot into the starting DT role next to Grady Jarrett immediately. He would give Atlanta a formidable collection of defensive tackles, especially after the recent signing of Tyeler Davison. He’s a good run stuffer and a proficient, albeit unspectacular, pass rusher who would have plenty of room to work, with Jarrett commanding most of the attention from the opposing offensive line.

Wilkins doesn’t deploy a diverse variety of counter-moves in the pass rush when his initial attack is stifled, but we’re used to seeing that after watching Vic Beasley in a Falcons uniform for four seasons. Unlike with Beasley, however, we wouldn’t be looking for anything more than adequacy in getting to the QB with Wilkins, since pass rushing wouldn’t be the only thing asked of him.

If the draft does shake out the way SB Nation is projecting it to, I wouldn’t be upset at all if the Falcons took Wilkins, although I’d personally rather take a right tackle in that scenario. Either way, both sides of the trenches must continue to be addressed

Emphasis added. I will continue to hope for an EDGE.

Sweat, Burns and Oliver gone? Howa' bout Gary here? I know he has the inconsistency rap, but maybe the FO likes him. He is projected in the first and can play inside.

Here is an explanation of taking Wilkins at 14:

Could this be a snapshot of how a Falcons draft might look?

By Cory Woodroof@CoryWoodroof47 Apr 14, 2019, 3:00pm EDT

Dane Brugler of The Athletic has compiled a mock for all available picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, and it’s exactly what you’d expect: a lot of names and numbers and prognostication, including a DT pick that looks a little less likely after the Falcons signed Tyeler Davison.

We’ve tallied all of his picks for Atlanta, which you can see below.

Here’s his reasoning for the Wilkins pick:

Atlanta certainly has talent on its defensive line depth chart, but not enough production. Wilkins will help change that with his ability to split gaps and make plays in the backfield. He also provides insurance if Grady Jarrett (currently on the franchise tag) and the Falcons can’t agree on a long-term deal.

Wilkins seems to be one of the safer picks in this year’s draft cycle, if not one of the most exciting. He lacks the tantalizing potential of an Ed Oliver or a Quinnen Williams, but lacks the floor that would make you regret taking him early. If the Falcons went this direction, chances are they’d be mothballing Senat quite a bit next year and/or having Grady Jarrett and Jack Crawford dabble at end a bit.

Really, if the Falcons walked away with him with pick 14, it’d be a very sound pick and give Atlanta a formidable quintet of defensive tackles. It just wouldn’t, perhaps, make a lot of social media fireworks go off, and it would solve more problems in 2020 than 2019.

I would like to get a difference maker with the first pick.

It is much easier to pick up an adequate, run stopping DT in free agency, than a difference maker.

Give me Devin Bush, OT, or trade back in this scenario.

Agreed. At 14 it expected. But he could be the guy that the FO likes.

I hope a highly regarded edge player falls to the Falcons.

In the mock posted, who would you take?

I guess I'll get crazy here....

If going by that mock and not trading up......I'd trade down to 27 (gain an extra 2nd and 4th) and take Greedy. Then trade back up to 29 and take Deandre Baker. Then go trenches with the rest of the draft picks.

That would give us Trufant's replacement next year with a CB core of Greedy, Baker, and Oliver.

@g-dawg feel free to call me crazy.

I told you I was going to get crazy. I know Tim didn't want to hear another Wilkins/Oliver first rd pick that's been beat to death here. I tried the Bob Ross approach with a blank canvas but with psychedelic colors this time. It's like one of those pics at the mall where you have to stare at it for 10 min until you see the image.

But imo, I think it's Oliver or Wilkins.
